What I used to get my Thready and Jew from the river:

7 foot rod

rod action is med though i consider it as a light rod

reel is similar to 2500 diawa reel

mainline is 10lb

Leader is 17lb

Note that I use HBs, not bait

hope that helps 51MPL

would go heavy as a baseline if livebaiting, i use 30lb braid on 25lb rod and 250 calcutta when chasing threadies (on lure), keeping the fight short is better for fish if you intend to release

i use the same setup on smaller fish (snapper, cod) very deep in structure, when fishing more open water i downgrade to a 15lb setup with a medium taper 8-20lb rod which is more in the 8lb than the 20lb

theres too many variables when livebaiting imo to fish light, nothing sucks more than being hooked up to eg a big stingray on light gear and having to slog it out forever. fishing closer to structure with livies you're likely to single out the bigger models and it pays to have that insurance plan if somethings heading for a cluster of pilons

cheers

Depends on rod quality.

I have a 6-8kg Egrell one peice with a quite cheap Okuma reel on it (bit bigger than a 2500 size).

I have it rigged up with 20lb braid (Fireline) with a 15,30 or 40lb leader and I find the 20lb braid quite thick and a little heavy.

I think I will downgrade it to 18lb braid.

With a good quality reel upcoming it will handle anything in the river.

But I would prefer a nice baitcaster setup for sure.

They are just so much more a tidier rod/reel for the river. .

Cheers

I run a Trion 3-5kg with a daiwa revros 3000 spooled with 15p? braid. It seems to do the job but am yet to pull in a monster on it to really test it out. I think Nadders makes a great point in regards to releasing the fish healthier on the heavier gear.

thanks qbkami but i've got a similar setup to what you posted and i use that for like general purpose estuary fishing targeting bream, flatties, trevs etc.. im thinking of going heavier - reason being i get to choose a new reel for winning ROTM and just after some advice :)

Would you go a 4000 or 5000 size reel nadders? and what weight rod? i have a 6-10kg one sitting at home doing noting so was thinking of using this?

like troutman i prefer baitcasting setups, but 4000 is fine as long as the reel you choose can put out a decent amount of drag. 6-10kg is all good but every rod is different, as i said i use an 8-20lb (4-10kg) rod on my light setup and its more like a 6-12lb rod. you'll want something with plenty of power a little bit of give in the tip to cushion your hook-set but it should stiffen up relatively quick so you can really put the hurt on

i dont like using baitrunners as the fish has more of a chance of gut hooking itself

did anyone mention uglysticks or crystal power tips by silstar, bit long in the tooth, but for general purpose fishing; seven feet, very flexible in any direction, no backbone),run over them, jam them in car doors, poke the tips into nearly anything,& they`ll be as good as the day I bought mine way back. You can literally catch whiting, to bream & flatties, as well as any reef encounted goodness. 4000 size reel with 20 pound fins works fine. will give you a bit of sport on the bigger stuff, but will handle most fish. these even cast well, for the serious lure fisher, this is also where it shines. it is very whippy throuout its profile, but has a solid enough but section, to be able to throw some decent casts. mines good for 30-65gm of chrome. has a high mount fuji seat, & guides (9), under/overbound in gold on black. the varnish is starting to peel a bit on mine, but no way a hindrance. is a bit old. there's two chunks out of the bottom grip from a muddy I found in the shallows. the rod was the only thing I had in the moment, he latched on,after some serious coaxing, scooped him into the now prepared bucket, & that was dinner. I have used this rod on, coral cays, throwing 30gm twisties at big trevers to 4kgs strippies, moses perch, cod, coral trout, longtom, dart & even sml tuskies. at night, caught 3-4kg spankled emperor, & a couple of shovelnose sharks in the 25kg bracket, which were all released. the spangly was big breakfast.

I cant fault this rod one bit, even if I wanted to. that`s just my opinion.

p.s. reels are, certate 2500,with 20 pound td sensor shimano sustain fd 4000,with 20 pound fins. happy fishing.

yeah i got a 7foot ugly stik with a penn 850 spin fisher that has given me reliable service for over 15 yrs very simple design reel thats bullet proof has caught me large spanish mackerel big jew big threadfin big cod, snapper, sweetlip and in the bay is sensitive enough for flathead jacks etc . i love when the spotties show up this rod and reel just nails them and i have found with reels the more gadgets they come with the more that can go wrong. i have seen these reels of late come on special at shops for 150 bucks with a 7 foot penn rod as a combo gives you good bang for your buck

One of my fav outfits is my original 1982 7' ugly stick with an Abu Cardinal 7 something or other reel from the same year(when they were still made in Sweden and were the ducks nuts). Can catch anything on that gear. Have had the rod done up once, and the reel is now left hand drive only cos the spindle wore out on the right hand side, but I reckon I can get a couple more years out of both.
