Smash & Boil!

Now I know what it means, This morning went out about 9am with the wife, son and the dog Polly she dont think she's a dog. I thought I've been fretting that I;ve bought this boat and I've got to get out into the ocean into some open water so after thinking about it for days I woke up this morning and rang the Volunteer Coast Guard at Mooloolaba who said it was 10 to 15 knots with about 2 metre swell not a great day but okay of you stick to the Geriatric Bay then he laughs. Well I thought that'll do me. So we head off and gets to the ramp no problems nice ramp not too busy. Into the water and off, I was thinking I'll have a nice drive around the Geratric Bay keep the missus happy and then back home in time for lunch.

Well we got out from behind the wall into the open water and the boat was handling okay a bit choppy but not too bad, so I heads off for Old Woman Island, I thinking this is okay boats handling okay feeling more confident so I heads off out of the bay a little from the shelter. Then the missus tells me to head back into shelter as its too choppy for her "I'm not feeling the best" so I does as I'm told and heads closer to shore and its fine, I thought I may as well throw a Lure out here and take my time because I dont thing this is going to last too long a day before were back into the harbour area.

I'm chugging around for about 5 minutes when I saw some birds diving in to the water and thought I'll hed over there and have a look and I heads off after them. I hadnt gone 2 minutes when I saw it happen BOILING and SMASHING right next to the boat you could have reached out and grabbed these fish I kid you not. Next thing the reel screams and I'm hooked up Jesus I thought this is great. Pulls it in and a nice spotted mack then the birds are gone.

Thats it, this is what its all about, the adrenalins up and I'm off chasing birds around Mooloolaba Bay. No joke it was happening everywhere birds diving Fish a smashin and a boiling, It was better than the movies and like reading one of the Veterans Threads. No sooner than youre in amongst them, then there gone again, I must have been in amongst them like this at least a half a dozen times. You could see the Macks some really big ones too. Trouble is I didnt have the cleares on the sides rolled up gear not ready or organised. Still I was having a great time but then the missus says shes not feeling well and Polly is sick as well, my son is tending to Polly (Dog) and I try to get some more time out there but alas no way I had to head back in. Nice spottie though tea tonight. If anyone is heading up this way honestly it was going off today and not that many boats around only about 5 and 2 yakkers who were amongs them too.

Hi Nads

Geriatric Bay is I think the area around the beaches in Mooloolaba close to shore and near to the shark net, the waters were much more smoother there than outside the walled garobour area. Old Woman Island is just outside this but the Coast Guard reckoned that the beach side is protected. There were about 4 or 5 yakkers racing around chasing the Macks and a couple of small dinghies so it was well protected for them. After doing it I wouldnt have any problem with my 4.85 stessco as well

The Mack was about 65cm have to upload the picture I weiged it filleted last night before we cooked it up and it weighed in at 780gm (thats my fillting)

good report dave.must head up that way soon.look forward to the pics sounds like a nice mackie mate.not to much blood for the wifey ay dave:laugh:

Hi Mick

Developed a way to dispatch them cleanly, Tap on the scull in the boat then over the side and a quick thrust with a boning knife throught the gills to the brain area (Like a Lobotomy) Keeps all the blood on the transom area then catch into the esky. Now shes worried about the esky smelling  ..cant win so another esky for catch and bait another for the missus. One good thing though she wants to learn how to drive the boat so when I'm fishing and setting up gear she can take control and chase them birds around.

hey mate what size lures were you chucking at them or were you just trolling only?

Kev

I was tossing a small slug I think about 5gm, I caught the mack on a Lure which was one out of a Barra Pack from BCF 2nd mack on that lure.

To bad the day had to end so soon, I thought you would have done well if you could just buzz around looking for them as the boil. Are that's what you get for taking the family out.

 back in the day when I was with my girlfriend and we went fishing and she want to go home as she got cold but the fish were on so I fished it did not go down well.

 the single life!
