Flathead @ Clontarf Wading 29.05.2010

Guys,

Got the cobwebs off the waders and headed to the Clontarf foreshore for a session walking the shallows. Plenty of flathead about, although it was hard to see the flathead shooting off in font of me at times with the rainy conditions.

Started the session aroun 2pm and finished on dusk. Low was around 4pm. Caught 9 flathead, 4 keepers (largest at 49cm). Plastics that did the damage were the 3" Shrimp Molten Gulp and the 80mm Berkley Fish in Pink. Fished with very heavy jig weight to get a good cast in.

Ran into a couple of guys who were drifting past in their tinny. They had caught a couple of squire in the same area. Didn't think too much of it until I wandered in a new area, flicked out the Berkley to see whether there were any flathead about and caught a lovely squire (36cm). It put up a great fight in the shallows. I might have to target these little brutes a bit more (if I can tear myself away from lizard fillets ;) ).

Definitely worth the effort in the rain.

See ya,

Stewie.

Tomca,

The spots I frequent the most for the flathead seem to be the most productive in Winter, so reports are a bit reflective. My theory is they come into these more shallow areas to get a bit warmer over the Winter months. Hope that continues for the next few months.

Stewie.
