Sand mines have been terminated on strady. A plus for the island but not so good for the guys that have to look for another job, especially bad with what numb nuts is doing to the mining industry, tool.

P.s soccer sux, take of the air.

On 9`s TV news the report was that existing leases will not be renewed,1 lease runs out in 2013/15, the other runs out in 2017.

Approximately 400 jobs directly or indirectly will be lost.

Update..

The existing 30+mining leases are to be closed out, with no lease renewals or new ones considered, by 2027..over 17 years...

Except for consideration of a "special case" renewal application by the Enterprise mine, who had applied for renewal before the policy`s announcement.

the bit i saw a couple of days ago they are going to make most the island a nature reserve, so i guess the allready established housing value will go up quite a bit too. the pic showed even the beaches covered in "green" to be designated reserves, hope it doesnt affect the ability to be able to fish these areas.

the figures I read say 80% will eventually be declared national park, with 50% declared within 18 months, and the plan is to give formal native title recognition to the murri traditional owners who apparently, like us, don`t know whats going on either.

Capt.Bligh says that the island will go from industrial site to eco-tourism,which from my knowledge(to an extent limited)means you pay through the nose, restrictions on what you can and can`t do and you are limited in where you go.

Also being able to drive the beach I guess will be knocked on the head :(

I'm very suspect of this, it not just 600 jobs going it is 600 high paying jobs. Its not like there is much else work available to those living on the island and many of those others survive off of a lot of mining expenditure.

National parks beach driving is big target and I think it will be a matter of time beofre we get thrown off it. Prices there are already stretching my budget and eco tourist areas usually price out families in my experience so the yuppies can drink shardoney undistracted.
