Hi guys. Tried SP last weekend in Brissy river and got nothing. Im not sure if I'm retrieving correctly. Basically i was casting then waited a bit, twitch the rod, reel in a bit and do all over again. I would say it was taking a minute or 2 to retrieve each time. Any comments or suggestions?

g'day mate and welcome to the site, theres heaps of info on sofplastic fishing on here so i suggest giving the older threads a good looking at, plastic fishing does take some knack in knowing what works for what species when it comes to size and weight etc as for retrieves lures are ment to imitate live bait so working a prawn or shrimp type plastic you would be looking for a steady slow sink rate with a good twitch once its on the bottom. curl tail grubs i have found work best with a slow steady retrieval once it has sunk to right part of the water coloum you want to fish. also knowing where to fish is a big thing, look for structure that may hold fish, rockwalls, over hanging mangrove trees etc. without writing an essay thats the best tips i can offer but give the threads a good read and you should come up with the answers you need.

Hi Will

There are more expert anglers on this forum than I but I will give you my 2 cents.

1. Equipment: In my experience a graphite rod, light braid 2-15lb, 2500-4000 style reel works best for plastics however you can get away with glass rods, it's all about feel. These light spinning outfits really suit plastics fishing.

2. Learning to fish with plastics: can be very frustrating but you have to learn to read the conditions, use your sounder and make an educated guess on what you think you are going to target/catch. The easiest way to start is targeting flatties, Bream or squire, for flatties make sure your plastic is contacting the bottom the chances are you will catch a flatty...but you might get a bream, flounder, tailor who knows....for squire, find a good patch on the sounder hook on a 4-6 inch plastic let is sink to the bottom or mid water do a double hop, real in the slack let it drop down again...snapper usually will take it on the drop (as will most fish!)

3.Invest in a specific plastics DVD, there are plenty out there...I learnt from the Shimano series Soft Plactics secrets....great DVD.

Stick with it......it took me a while to get confident with them, I still revert back to bait when I am in the boat from time to time but I still plug away with plastics.

I am sure there will be a tonn advice you will get but do some google searches and there is a heap of info on Youtube.

Good luck

Make sure the weight of you jigg head suits your line test, also make sure your jigg suits your plastic.

Good method is throw out, let it hit the bottom give a couple of flicks (like a fish fleeing or injured), let it drop to the bottom again then repeat on retrieve.

From memory a Youtube search on soft plastic fishing for flathead should show a good basic starter flick.

This one is good, and it shows the basic methods and techniques that can also be applied in the river and surrounding estuary s.
