Recommendations for Reef gear...

Scope

Recommended Posts

G'day guys, after a little bit of advice again.

Got the late call up to Stanage Bay, leaving in a couple of weeks. Have to say I'm massively excited. Problem is I own nothing heavier than a 3-5kg rod as I have never really needed anything much bigger.

Just wondering if anyone in the know can recommend some decent, reasonably priced heavy duty gear.

To give you an idea I will probably only use it once or twice a year.

Thanks in advance - Jono

Hey Scope,

I've got a 15-24kg Wilson Live Fibre with a (superior imo) Daiwa SLD30 2speed spooled with 50lb Daiwa braid and underspooled with 15kg Trilene mono. All in good nick.

You can borrow that if you like.

Break it replace it rules :)

Thanks heaps for the kind offer Ellicat, I might just buy one though because I'd hate to do any damage to your gear. I may take you up on it if i get stuck, but will have a quick hunt around first. Thanks again mate, much appreciated :)

i have a used 15-24kg live fibre spin i will part with for $100 all u need then is a good quality spin reel , u can use the rod for flicking huge poppers or droppping on the reefs.

That sounds pretty tempting there Wes. I don't suppose you could recommend anything (reelwise) off the top of your head?

This is all new to me, so forgive my ignorance. Are spinning reels still pretty good at that size?? Or do overheads have better features?

Would probably prefer spin because that's what I'm comfortable with, however always open to learn

ipicked up my penn spinfisher 850 for $110 on special at bcf, and ive seen them drop down to that price a few times, i think they normally retail at around 200. but its good solid reel that has never failed me and if taken care of will last a life time. imo there a no frills reel just a good workhorse

Hi Jono, Sounds like you're being given good advice about reels and rods. You may want to check what line your fellow anglers will be using. Worse thing in the world to turn up with the only reel fitted out with expensive braid to find that everyone else has mono and won't let you drop a line lest you cut them to pieces.

Depends on a few things about the reefs you will be fishing ;)

what depths /sinker /lure size

type of fishing ie: jigging / bottom bashing

as far as line goes 30lb braid should be fine :)

I'd go a overhead reel just my opinion ;) the faster the retrieve ratio the better :)

Stanage bay area doesn't need huge line capacity but if plans for going wide in the future maybe a bigger reel might be the go ;)

Cheers Gaz

Cheers Kreel - Didn't think of that :) Will get onto it

penn spinfisher sounds the go mate at a good price, they hold so much line for a spin reel, very solid reel.

i had a 6500b baitrunner on it that was well balanced.

fin nor have big spins

opus bull

will scout the ranges on offer and find the best prices i can for them when i am at the shops again. or check the latest qfm mag or bush and beach for sales going this month.

Mate......

Your going too fast and tech here........

Just go and get yourself a good large deep spool hand line with 80 lb line, and some wire traces.

Works everytime, and you will have lots of money left over for beer.

Enjoy your trip, take some panodol.

Cheers
