Just wide of the Cathedrals 29/6

Headed over to Straddie for a few days with my family and Angus and Tanya.

After a rather uneventful trip over Angus and I headed out monday afternoon to get ice, fuel and bait to be greeted by the dreaded ticking sound from the trailer. Pulled over to see that I had lost a bearing budding and the wheel bearing had self destructed on one of the trailer wheels. We limped back a couple of km's to Angus' place to assess the damage.

Luckily one of his neighbours Caarl lent us some tools, advice, bearing grease and a helpful hand. We went for a spin to Dunwich and picked up a set of bearings and raced home to do the repair. All was going well with both bearings and races removed from the hub and the small end race pressed in until we tried to get the big end race in. The hub was damaged beyond repair with the metal mushroomed out. With 5pm quickly approaching the race was on to find a replacement hub.

It was looking pretty grim but the owner of Straddie Super Sports at Dunwich kindly met us after hours and supplied us with a replacement hub. Unfortunately it was with out a brake disc but still enough to get us back on the road to go fishing and limp home. We got back home at about 7pm still hopefull of hitting the water at dawn. We packed the bearings only to find big gouges one the underside of the axle. $#%# we wear going to have to grind the surface smooth. It was going to have to wait till the net morning. We got back to the boat to find Carl had already filed the surfaces smooth with a draw file. What a legend. Stuffed around a bit fitting the hub and wheel and zip tied the now defunct brake caliper to the trailer fram and we were ready to go fishing.

Now the fishing part. B)

Launched at Amity just after lunch to a somewhat choppy and ominous looking bay. Zipped around to south passage and crossed a virtually non existant bar hugging the beach. Outside it was smooth as so travelled at 50kph+ around the point down to a couple of generic marks I had pulled off the internet for the Cathedrals area.

Struggled to find anything worth a serious crack so sounded around a kilometer or two wider until we found an ok isolated show. Rigged up and repositioned for the first drop. First drop, bang both on for a couple of snapper. For a while the snapper were coming in at one or two fish per drift before shutting down when we wer at seven snapper between 38 and 55cm.

Altered our drift line 30m to the north and found some wire weed and pearlies to go with it. First drop we were on and each drop from then on produced a pearly with a couple of double headers on the patternoster. Reached bag limit in no time with pearlies ranging from about 37-50+cm. Left them biting hard as we decided to play it safe and cross the bar with plenty of light remaining.

Awesome session for just over two and half hours fishing time.

We wanted to have a crack at some AJ's and bigger snapper on the 29's the following day, but much to my disgust the girls wouldn't let us go. Wednesday ended up dead calm all day, though it rained pretty hard all morning.

Headed home Wednesday afternoon feeling paranoid about the bodged together fix on the bearing and hub. Pulled over and checked for overheating every few km but it remained ice cold. Will do a proper fix this week.

Still stumped as to what happened as I replace bearings and races annually and give the bearing buddies a few squirts every couple of trips. I even check the temp of hubs every 50km's or so. Am seriously considering fitting durahubs.

Thanks to Angus and Tanya for their hospitality and a great getaway.

Sure Angus will post a few pics when he gets back.

Lousy luck with the Trailer Dom but the fishing sounded good, good spot there hope you marked it down on the sounder? On Wednesday it rained at Boat Rock but not too bad just slipped on the raincoats and we were okay and it only showered for a few minutes. great that the guy helped you out with the trailer hubs and grinding, and how smooth was the Bay. Looking forward to meeting up and having a fish

We thought we saw you. We were going to drop by and say g'day but were seriously short on fishing time.

You guys had a couple of great sessions judging by your reports.

Will have to give boat rock a crack when the forecast is ok but not up to scratch for heading wider.

Bad luck with the bearings, Thats why I set up both my boat and camper trailers with a fully fitted and greased hub as once I had to do a bearing change on my work trailer on the side of the road on a friday arvo on a blazing hot summers day. Great fishing though maks up for it

Apart from the trailer drama sounds like a good trip!

Just out of interest is this Carl from Bigoon Road?

Not sure of the street name but if you mean Carl the pro fisherman and the guy that sells awesome prawns then yep thats him. Top bloke.

Azza had that exact plan. As I don't have a spare will get one and have a hub pre packed and ready to go.

Yes just the clarify that is Carl from Bigoon Road.

Anyone travelling to straddy needs to see him about some prawns.

Awesome day Dom cheers for bringing the boat.

I have been eating pearlies and snapper all week and it is NOT getting old.

I am running on very slow net over hear, hence not much forum usuage this week.

Once I get home ill upload some pictures :)

Cool. Glad you enjoyed it and nothing went to waste.

Curtii,

I just find generic marks from:

Then its just a matter of spending a bit of time sounding around and finding the fish. They usually are nearby.
