What's a jigging rod?

Scope

Recommended Posts

G'day guys, just been looking at getting some heavy gear and wanted a bit of clarification.

Excuse my ignorance here :P

When a rod or reel is described as 'jigging' - what does this mean exactly?

e.g - is it just for putting heavy jigs on for say kingfish and the like?

Or can you fish it with bait as well?

Reason I ask is I'm kinda looking for something I can put bait or plastics on...

Cheers - Jono

Most modern 'jigging' rods could drag the titanic up from it's grave Scope, having a ultra fast action and being relitavely short. Almost like the old fiberglass boat rods my old man used on Jewies back home.

You would be better off going for something a bit lighter I would say, although I would dare to say some manufacturers have already stepped into fill the void labeled 'light jigging tackle'

Depends mate, are you after BIG stuff, sharks Etc?

Not really sure mate. Heading up to stanage bay with the inlaws. Was told not to go lighter than 50-60pd braid. Kind of thing to drag monsters out of the reef with. I am leaning towards spin gear because that's sorta what I know.

Any advice would be very welcome :)

I'd be leaning towards overhead jigging gear mate, you can generally screw more drag out of an overhead than you can a spin reel, but it all comes down to personal preferance. Check out Shimano's Jigwrex or Blue rose series rods, might be a good starting point
