A small dam in Mount Cotton

So the Saturday just gone, myself, Ted (CrazyWalrus) and his 2 boys headed out to Mount Cotton in search of those so called pesky Carp. As I hadnt caught one in Oz and being a mad keen British Carper I was well up for having a go.

We pull up at the dam (or lake as I like to call it) armed with our rods, a tim of Spam, a loaf of Wonderbread and tons of enthusiasm, we walked round the lake looking for a good spot. The water was muddy and we could definately see lots of evidence fish. I spotted a carp taling by the far end of the lake and we fished near by.

I put on some lead weight with a cube of luncheon meat and before long I was into a fish! But sadly for me not a carp. It was an eel! One of 4 that I end up hooking that day, though only 2 actually made it onto the bank! Before too long the carp were begining to show, but not for me however! The boys were really starting to outfish us and it was long before the eldest- Declan pulled out a carp. Ted was beaming from ear to ear! Not just because his 7 year old son had outfished the so called carp expert, but also because he was going to make me committ the biggest sin known to an English carper. The blood was on my hands today, and I was about to send the bugger into fishy heaven! And Ted had even bought a new mallett, just for this occasion. The rest is history. It took me the whole day to catch my own carp, but in the end, just before the sunset I managed to get my first one and I took my second kill.

So the scores at the end of our day were as follows:

Mark and Declan on 3 fish each, Jacob on 2 and Ted on 1.

Jacob not to get out done by his older brother sends another into fishy heaven

the carp busters good onya guys as these buggers are pests in our waterways and during easter in bauedesert there is a weekend they have to help rid that area of carp which may have some prizes involved with it but i'm not 100% sure on this.

Good to see you get a taste of home Markus!

Youll be used to disposing of them soon enough :P

Dont forget Bulimba Creek at Carindale has a healthy large carp population and plenty of tilapia to boot.

Angus

Angus, what section of the Bulimba are you talking?

From my side verandah I can see a small widening of the creek and there's plenty of surface activity there of an afternoon. Are you talking just carp/tilapia or other fresh species?

Any clues on where to go to get these beasts? I got hooked on catching tilapia in the open day at leslie harrission and would love to take my kids to a local spot an teach them the finer points?
