hey all

im loking for a reel that can be used for sharking, offshore and big live baits. ive found these two reels the penn 850ssm spinfisher and the diawa 4000 excellor. thats around the price i would to spend and i no that they dont make the spinfisher in america any more and there suposedly not as tough now as when they were made in america. but i dont no much about the diawa and would love if someone could help and recomend which reel they think would be better for me. ohh and if anyone has owned or used one of thses reels your recomendations would be appreciated alot

cheers ryan

i have a old penn 850ss and a recent model in th 850 and both reels have been reliable and stood up to alot of fishing against big brutes hundreds of times. i don't know anything about the daiwa but i always go for the penn in that range as they are simplistic with very few parts compared to other reels with more options which i have found that can go wrong. i am tuff with my gear and they have never let me down

I have the 4000 exceller mate... It's definately okay for the price although the standard drag is pretty rubbish even for the price. I put carbontex in mine and it's alot better. I use it in the surf for GT's and have hooked sharks with it also. Definately smooth and reliable no doubt tho. The drag in my old Sedona was better off the rack though in my opinion and half as much. My mate has a spin fisher and the thing is a MACHINE! Bulletproof and if you were angling for serious $hit it'd be the reel you'd wana have in your corner! Heaps more capacity too.. Elops is right though they weigh a tonne, you wouldn't wana be using it to cast over and over with. If you plan to use it for baiting go the Penn, Lures go the Exceller.
