What 2nd offshore rod ???

Recommended Posts

Guys/Girls

Im a big fan of raider rods and shimano baitrunners. I have a shimano raider snapper 5-8 kg with a baitrunner reel. I have an identical reel which im looking for a 2nd rod for offshore stuff and mackerel fishing this summer.Do i buy another 5-8kg or go for the heavy snapper at 5-10 kg.

Is a 5-10 kg to overkill for the odd offshore trip and floating pillies for mackerel and maybe trolling lures.

Any comments appreciated.

Cheers

Bri.

Hey Bri,

What sized bait runner, what line and what budget?

I would go a slightly heavier setup so you have a bit more stopping power for when the bigger ones come along.

Something like a daiwa grand wave will be hard to beat. Nice soft tip for float lining, but serious stopping power. I have stopped 30+ kg amberjack with a 12-40lb overhead model. Good value at around $140 too.

Probably the 15-30lb would be my pic for a baitrunner 4500 or 6500.

OK fair enough. When you say UK baitrunner's I am pretty sure of the ones you mean. Silver body with the double handle. Not really intended as a heavy duty offshore real like the locally available series.

In that case the grandwave would be overkill the max. drag pressure of the real would be the limiting factor. The 5-10kg raider would be a good choice. They are awesome rods for the money and have seen some really good snapper taken on plastics using them.

This is the reel size about the same as a 4500,mainly used for big carp.

Ay Up Bri, Agree with Dhess and Tugger I've caught a spotted mack on my smaller reel and if hooked up on some larger ones on it and lost them real quick, I've just bought a shimano Tyranos 20 overhead reel with a 10-15kg Shimano beastmaster rod it will cover me for trolling adn when I get into the bigger fish

Tugger's trying to throw me off the scent so i don't outfish him at palmie this summer

depends on what you are chasing with the size lures you are doing it with. they could indeed be great and versatile combos but spaniards are big strong fish that burn a lot of line fast...

i'd be looking at a different rod more suited to your needs, from memory the raiders are designed as a faster actioned lure/plastic rod.
