Burrum Heads

Hi everybody. I am going to Burrum Heads in three weeks time. Will be taking my boat up with us. It's a 4m blue fin with a 30hp tohatsu. Can anyone give some info on fishing spots on the river and if there are any good spots just out the mouth? I have been there before but have never taking a boat there. What could one expect to catch?

There are 2 ramps there. The one closest to the mouth can be tricky at low tide or in a north wind. The other ramp is ok in all weather and all tides, although the current can be a bit tricky when it is on the run in or out. Try fishing the black banks (ask a local) on the opposite side of the river for bream and flatty. In summer you can also get trevs and jacks there. Also get some local help to find the Buxton Hole

which is a couple of km upstream and holds good fish at times. Lots of rock bars and sand banks between the ramp and the hole so the local knowledge is useful if you value your prop. Leave a few in the water for me as I like to fish there in summer ;) .

Thanks for the replys fellas. Will ask the local bloke who has the tackle about Buxton Hole and the Blank Banks. Will have to take it easy then if there are loads of sand banks about. Hopefully I can land a few decent fish. Will be taking a cast net up with me so will be using livies if I can get a few.

Try the north side near the mouth - the channel runs very close deep and fast but some decent fish go through there always worth a try. going up stream also try around the many islands for some good bream . The sand islands at low hold a good supply of yabbies and the drop offs around them hold some decent flatties. Could also try the Gregory which splits off on the north side good flatties; grunter, bream, whiting, cod, and others [ jacks in summer - have even seen one small barra caught just before the entrance ] Also a good place for bait fish and prawns at their times. There's a lot water so try to find some decent structure and go from there. SjS :fishing:

neither ramp is suitable to retrieve at low tide, but I did push keen-as-fisho's boat off the trailer over the edge of the ramp last time we were there. But the one upstream from the caravan park is better on the lower half of the tide, it has a kerb to stop you driving of the end of the ramp. While the other one can destroy the guards on your trailer when you run off the end, it drops about half a metre to the bottom. Definitely need 2 people when retrieving the boat when the current rips through there.
