Towing boat on P's

as far as i know its fine, i'm sure i've seen other P platers towing trailers. just have to remember your braking distance is increased and your car is longer than normal. seems a stupid thing to say, but the amount of cars towing trailers that sit right up the backside of other cars and trying to slip into gaps way too small is just scary.

Yeh mate, I towed my boat plenty on P's and checked out the legalities before i did it for the first time... As neal said it is a bit different, also take corners a little wider, practice ur hill starts if you drive manuel and most of all... PRACTICE REVERSING!!! You don't want people shaking their heads at the boat ramp thinking your just another stupid kid

yep towing on p's is all good, as for reversing with trailer if not used to it, dont make big turns of the wheel to keep it straight if you do a you turn near the ramp and drive forward till the trailer is straight keeping it that way is easy if you keep your wheel movements between 10 & 2

good info there kriso...

a handy tip in addition to kriso's 10 & 2 o'clock rule i use is to use your side mirrors to reverse. if you see your trailer in the right window, turn right, if you see your trailer in the left window turn left. never fails!

Except at Monduran when you can't even see your trailer in the dark :pinch:

A bit off topic (sorry Dan), but I use a light board so there is no light when reversing the trailer. Also the trailer is narrower than the car, so when it's perfect I can't see it. If you have lights on the trailer you should be sweet, or just put a couple of flags on sticks (which is what Ray has/had I think...good idea.

Might need to check that info Dan. Pretty sure it is the same for boats as cars and that P platers need 0.00. Worth checking if you are thinking about having a drink on board or going out early after a big night. No disrespect, Dassa, you might be on the money.

porbably just stating the obvious but p plates must be visible on the back of the trailer. my mate uses those sticky ones that only go on glass for his car but keeps a seperate magnetic one for when hes towing his boat.

Yep.... all good info there!

Trailer towing permitted and P plate to be displayed at rear and visible for 20m at angle of 45degrees to either side and above.

0.00 alcohol for P plates now as from the 1st July 2010

As for the reversing, I open the drivers door a little and hang out of it looking back. Keep the rear mudguard just in view and its straight back from there. But stop and check passanger side mirror every so often to ensure no one has snuck in there.
