I have just brought a kayak from ebay, looks ok, all kitted out with rod holders and tracking fin, looks like the pre owner modified it, so thats good for me.

As its been like 20 years since i have actually kayaked, so what i want to do is were is a good place to use it, I normaly like to go down to the gold coast for land based fishing, but im willing to try other areas.

Welcome to the AFO Plastic Navy. You're more than welcome to join Tacklebox and me whenever we head out - in fact that goes for anyone really. Weve been hitting Ningi Creek (off Pumicestone Passage) and Jacob's Well canals recently but we're always up for a change of scenery.

I got one of those. Great little yak for canals and skinny water. Not for the offshore stuff though.

Yer Im not game to go offshore in a yak yet, maybe after i have played with it for a while, i might try that, but hopefully it can take me to straddy from the spit and back again. Would it be any good in putting one of those berley release pots on the yak, so that when i paddle i will have a nice trail, or would that be unwise with the sharks around.

Depends what you burley with. I went out to a reef off Wello Point and filled my burley bucket with prawn and sand crab shells that I'd eaten the night before... watched as a 60cm plus tuskie swam right up to it! Couldn't hook up with any that size though :( Are sharks attracted to the scent of prawn/crab?

Picked up my new toy today, and cant wait to use it, but i do need to get better roof racks, as the foam removable ones from bcf tend to flex my roof, and i really dont want that, does anyone know where i can get some cheap but good racks, i would prefure it if im able to remove them when i dont need them.

  • 2 weeks later...

Finaly brought a Eafle cuda 300 from bcf, I figure its $100 so i should get it while its cheap.

I have spent about 1 hour installing it, im supprised how easy it is, all i have to do now is, wait for the Battery to finnish charging, and i will be out on the water tomorrow morning.

Will take pics, if im not having too much fun.

thats not going to work. To shoot through the hull it needs either a big dollop of allclear with no airbubbles or a watertight well filled with water for the transducer to sit in. might want to join KFDU and check the DIY section in the rigged kayaks forum

As tomca said about the shooting threw the hull options, I've tried both and prefer the water well the best. I used a yoga spong/ foam thingy that I found at clarks rubber for 12 bucks, cut it to fit the transducer and glued down. Glue was from clarks rubber, bostik plasic glue 4 bucks. What ever foam you use must not leak or absorb the water. Also no gaps between the foam and yak.
