Lack of bait within the easturies?

After a quick outing to hope island yesterday eventuating in a doughnut (with two small flathead dropped at my feet), I noticed that there was very few signs of bait showing anywhere.

In an area where there are normally Gar, mullet, biddies, prawns etc there was not a sign of anything resembling a baitfish.

I believe this helped contribute to my doughnut, but my biggest worry is could this be a sign of a bigger problem, or did I just catch the area on a bad day?

I haven't, however seen it this bad before.

Has anyone else noticed this anywhere else or is it just an isolated one off thing?

I notice less bait in winter, not too sure but there is more thermal mixing of the water columns in summer and this moves detritus around (food for small fish and prawns).

I think it tends to shut down a bit over winter.

Just a theory mind you not 100% on that one.

they are further upstream closer to the fresh, coomera is loaded with bait at this very moment, herring galore at all sizes, mullet and poddy mullet thick as and getting smashed up too by the resident trevs.

yesterday seen 8 trevs and 4 tailor boated in thhe coomera and about to go back down for another bash at em.

We didn't get a touch, hardly even a sniff on baits anyway

Thanks Wesfish, might have to plan my movings closer to that of the bait movements... Would of been the smarter thing to do :laugh:

So long as the bait is still there, must just be seasonal in the end

theres heaps of bait around the north side, y just gotta spend the time and money in investigating spots and know what to look for and how they behave

Lots of hardy heads around the mouth of the river (brizzie) today. Haven't come across any herring for a while, but I haven't really been looking so they might be around.
