Fish ID help?

Had a great day at Beachmere with the kids today. For only a couple of hours ( due to having to drop 15 year old off to friends Grrrrrrr) my little snappers and I got into the whiting. Nan and Pop already had 30 in the esky before we even got there. The funnist part of the day was when a squid chased one of the whiting up to the boat. I quickly threw a squid jig on a line but did not have any luck as the squid shied away. I thought I would leave the jig in the water and suddenly the rod started to bend. I thought you beauty Calamari and whiting for dinner tonight. I start winding up and after a little battle, the biggist dirtiest toad fish I have ever seen is hanging on to my jig. It was that big, the kids thought we could keep it as a pet...I expalined to them, with those teeth, it would a bit hard to pat it.....

Anyway, I have only had the boat for 6 months so, I have lost time on the fishing knowledge. My son picked up this fish and I have no clue on what it is....Can you help.

Regards

Tony..

Tony its a Grinner, get ready to catch more of them they are useless bludgers, no good to eat, no good to catch and they'll climb all over your lines just when you're after some quality fish.

Looks like you got some nice whiting though.

Tonzie, Dhess was just trying to help out

if you keep a protected species or a poisonous/noxious fish, you can do yourself a lot of damage.

grinners are as rare as cow poop on a cow farm. but far less useful. while not the best live bait, certain fish will have a chew on them and as Ryan said, many do have success with them in the crab pots.

other than that one notable "fish", a great day out with the goods to show for it :)
