Got my first catch on a Hard body lure on weekend using an ecogear SX40 (lure looks great under water) got a small GT. This has given me a taste for lures usually would bait fish. I have caught some small dart etc.. on soft plastics.

The hits are better no mucking around just bang!!

I am after any suggestions on lures (hardbody) that are recommended to try for jacks, as they will be back on the chew soon I am desperate to catch one on a lure maybe even soft plastic.

Any suggestions would be great....

ive been a pigheaded anti lure person for the last 10 years simply because of being mainly land based. But i think the tide is turning just the hit on the lure and watching fish chase it in has got me i think. Thats why im trying to get my head around what sort of hb's for what fish are best wouldnt mind getting a big lizard on one too....

Mate, I've been fishing for the last 4 years using pretty much only lures, and it's all been shore based stuff.

I've caught pike on SX40s, whiting and bream on blades, trevally on small poppers, flathead on plastics and a few little moses perch on gulp alive prawns. There are more, but I have a memory like Dory

I've even seen blackfish (luderick) caught on blades and big sea mullet attacking poppers.

it takes a lot of trial and error, but you will soon find being land based doesn't leave you at that much of a dis-advantage.

I've never caught a Jack myself, but I agree on that the general rule would be a baitfish profile with a gold/silver body. A floating lure would also help if you come across an obstacle, just stop the retrieve and the lure will rise above the snag.

As for Flatties, I've had the most success using pink tailed curl tailed grubs and natural prawn imitations.

Ah yes the jacks will be back soon,

Joy

I,ve found the beat plasticas foe jacks are shrimp or minnows styles but they work best during the day.You will need a fair bit of time between fish depending where you are.Hard bodies will work best at night, find one that will work the bottom of the snag/rock wall where you are fishing.

Hope that helps.

Best tip is to take the time to find the fish.

got a couple of nice jacks on my vibes last season, and a few smaller versions on 3 and 4inch powerbait minnows

i make my choice of lure depending on the structure of course, but a long open rock wall less than 3-4m deep i'd be more inclined to use a sinking vibration lure hopped along the front, or a bibbed minnow like a bomber or sx60 rolled or trolled across the front

fishing pontoons, boats and shallower areas i'd be more likely to use very lightly weighted plastics and fishing deeper jetties, pilons i'd stick with the vibes. very keen to start the jack season this year myself

cheers
