queensland Manly squid last night 20/08

Picked up two mid sized squid on the run out last night from william gunn jetty, missed another couple big tigers too, they were easily visible out the front rock wall area.

Probs head out again on monday and try woody point, hopefully they are on there as well.

No pictures, not big enough to bother, just saying they are still around.

Never done any squid fishing, do you just lock the drag down pretty much, or do you let them run & tire a bit ?

Hi yoyo,

fish them with light drag, just have constant pressure so that the barbs stay in, if you fish locked drag they can bend the barbs or rip their tentecles and you'll loose them. good fun when your're on a nice patch.

Don't strike as such either, just lift the rod and hold it fairly high and wind, i tend to wind the small ones in pretty quick, can jsut drag them along the top of the water and lift them clear up onto the jetty/land, depending how much ink they squirt.

The bigger ones have a fair amount of weight and can easily double it if they hold a lot of water in their tube, keeping your rod up high and waiting until they empty a bit can help, when their heads come out of the water tends to be the time that they will squirt. a couple I have barely lifted with a 2-5kg tcurve.
