Joe and I meet up with Davylad about 4:30am at Mooloolaba boat ramp and stowed our gear onto Dave’s boat. After a quick launch it was off to the seaway on the breaking light to see Carties producing some very clean waves and had me reminiscing back to my younger days that I spent on that point. Once we cleared the headland we had a little left over slop from the previous day’s strong winds but it was a pretty easy cruise over to the inner gnerings.

We found a decent bit of ground and drifted over it a few times for not a touch so after a quick pow wow we decided that Curimundi reef would be our next stop. Once there we found some promising ground and dropped the pick things were a bit slow to start with until I got hooked up to a nice little red rock cod that got sent back to see his mum. The morning progressed with the fishing neve being hot but enough fish coming on board to keep us amused. After a bit of a slow period Joe said well its all gone quite and just as the words finished coming out of his mouth his rod got slammed and he boated the biggest fish for the day a grassy about 50cm.

At this stage Dave had not put a fish in the boat and got a massive hit but alas was broken off early in the fight, this seemed to be the day for Dave hook only to lose the fish early in the fight. Joe was floating a pillie out into a burly trail of tuna when a small shark smashed it on the surface and a good fight commenced after a couple of blistering runs a nice little reef shark was boat side only to escape as the gaff was heading his way.

On the way home we came across a massive school of tuna but couldn’t hook a fish no matter what we tried. We managed 8 keepers for the day being a mixture of Grassy sweetlips, Maori cod and a good size stripy plus a small parrot.

We arrived back at the ramp and found all the pontoon space taken up by sail boats. Dave managed to find a spot to nose in so I could step onto the pontoon to go and retrieve the trailer. When I drove the trailer around to the rigging area I stopped in behind three other rigs waiting to use the ramp when a youngster tried to drive his xr6 between my trailer and the garden. Well this tool misjudged it and managed to smash up the side skirt on the garden edging, well didn’t he go off and was yelling abuse at me. I hopped out of the car to go and have a look and then told the little twit that if he couldn’t drive through the gap that was left that he shouldn’t be driving to start with. This brought more abuse my way and then lots of wheel spin as he flogged his car to show me how tuff he was. It was good for a laugh while I waited for my turn at the ramp. It never ceases to amaze me that you can only fit two cars onto a four lane ramp. All up it was a good day out and thanks to Davylad for having us aboard.

Couldn't win a thing that day, but found some good grounds for the future that looked real promising, also got some good experience on the boat and finally managed to drive the boat onto the trailer and got the hang of retrieving the anchor with the float thing with some guidance from Joe and Azza
