Water Quality/Visibility : Any Guesses?

Recommended Posts

Any guesses how long it might take for the water quality in the bay to get better?

Some people are saying the bay won't fire up again for 2 years +, find that a bit hard to believe.

Went out to a spot I fish in the Northern Bay 2 days before the flood and got 8 quality squiry snapper, 1 parrot and a nice flathead. Awesome fishing and then the floods came. Was so hangin to get back there and wet a line.

Also when the water clears up a bit, does anyone have any input on how this silty murky water might affect an outboard?

Cheers Guys & Gals

Tides and waves will disperse/mix the fresh and salt fairly quickly.

In places you'll find that the fresh water will have a layer of salt underneath it.

Re the silt in the water, a good flush out after use should clear it out. The silt may cause faster wear of water pump impellers especially for heavy users.

i would hazard a guess that it will take a fair number of months for the fish to move back in

theres talk of the silt and runoff affecting coral (im not an environmental scientist so wont comment either way on that) and destroying seagrass beds

the thing to remember is that the wet season has only just started and there will likely be plenty more runoff to come

offshore is the go right now imo, should be heaps of fish holding on the floating FAD's

Don't believe the doomsayers.

Things natural are very resilient.

I heard of someone who was going to chop down some trees because he thought they'd die as they have mud on their leaves

Get out for a fish as soon as you can and keep on going until you catch some. Let me know when they are biting again

Well Hervey Bay is but a drop in comparison to Moreton Bay at the moment....we had the Mary river flood first a couple of weeks ago now and its is still a coffee color  (the water in the bay), Tried a sesh on the pier today using live herring (you cant even see them off the pier) and both myself and my son got smashed on the incoming by, I suspect, black tip sharks, another guy near us foul hooked one but got off when we tried to gaff it up. all pretty much within a space of 15-20 minutes as the dirty stuff was coming back in. The ussual quality fish here, the locals reckon will come back in when the water clears..question is how long will it take?

Have to agree with ellicat.

Nature is much more resilient than the doomsayers will have us beleive.

As for inshore reefs, there have been many floods over thousands of years and inshore reefs have adapted to flood cycles.

Apart from selective cherry picking by the doomsayers, anything based on the last 200 years history should be questioned as that is simply a minute speck in Australia's history.

I went out for a sticky beak out to Tangalooma from Scarb today and took along a couple of rods. Motored out no faster than 15knts but didn't see any debris and the Redcliffe VMR had said it was a clear run yesterday too.

Saw some birds working close to the dirty water line which looked like this.

But the water was no clearer on the other side of that dirty foam. I half heartedly threw a slug for a few minutes at them but didn't try too hard.

Saw plenty of bait schools and larger marks on the fish finder around the beacons but couldn't anchor or do a decent drift because the current was ripping through there so I moved on.

The water was slightly less brown around the wrecks and but seemed much cleaner compared to closer around Scarborough which was filthy. Saw 8 trawlers out there, I figure they really couldn't trawl anywhere closer to the river mouth and would have been good to know if they were getting a reasonable catch.

Picked up a few legal whiting and sand flatties near the sand dunes but didn't stay long. There were only 2 other trailers at the boat ramp when we got there and only 4 when we got back so not many people are out in it.

So water quality- not too bad further out, visibility - non existent.

Thanks Guys to all that responded to this post.

Im going to try for a fish this weekend.

Saw 2 things on the news today that concerned me quite a great deal!

Marine Life: only 50 dugongs out of a possible 1000 spotted in the Bay due to, and I quote " FLOOD POLLUTED Moreton Bay "

They also tested parts of the Brisbane River and as we quessed is heavily polluted

Any thoughts about eating the fish that were tryin to catch at the moment, havin second thoughts on that one
