So just before xmas i set out on my annual pilgrimage to Fiji. After the 4 hour flight to Nadi, 1 hour flight to Savusavu and 1.5 hour boat trip to the small remote Island 30 nautical miles out to sea, I was ready to fish for 12 days!! The sea on the first 4 days was dead flat, almost spooky. In the boat it was like being on bitumen. The GT action was slow, however other welcome species appeared like Red Bass, Bluefin Trevally and Jobfish. All good fun considering they were all around the 6 to 8 kg mark. Flicking big plastics to them on my "Threddy" gear, Straddic 6000, 30lb braid and custom Gary Howard, they were a LOT of fun!! As the weather turned bad the fishing improved out of sight. We were casting big poppers over the reef drop offs and bommies, the big swell had the waves barrelling on the coral. Fishing action was insane, I even caught a small GT and a Red Bass one the same popper at the same time!! As the tide started to fall the "big" boys came out to play. The swell was so big i could hardly see my popper, all i could see was the head of big GT's coming out of the water to smash it. We caught 8 ranging from 22 to 38 kg between 2 of us in 2 hours. I had planned on one more cast, then a drink and a ciggy break. On that cast I had my popper engulfed (so much for my rest ) 90lb braid started to peel off my Stella, under that much drag, they are a truly remarkable fish. After a 20 minute battle he finally came up. I was shattered, these things drain every ounce of energy from you. A quick photo and off it went, however My Fijian friends do like to keep just a couple of fish (usually the smaller ones) to smoke the traditional Fijian way, with coconut husks and green banana leaves. It will last unrefrigerated for 5 days. They take it back to their village where they have no electricity. We also did a bit of trolling for spaniards and yellowfin. "Stupid" me decided to throw out a 8 inch Gulp on my "Threddy" outfit and just hold it while trolling for macks. I had in sitting out in the wash of the boat when it got hammered. After chasing this fish for what seemed like ages we got the boat on top of it. It just kept going and going and going.....first time ever I have been spooled. No idea what it was. Could go on more but you have got the general idea of how my trip was. Anyone thinking of fishing in Fiji...DO IT!!!! Thanks for reading....sorry it was a bit of a novel :cheer:
