Rods, Reels and Line

Hi everyone,

Can someone give me a heads up as to the gear needed to fish for quality snapper(or anything similar). I have been reading all these fantastic stories of quality fish being caught and need to get a bit of that action for myself. Only recently got back into fishing after a 10 year break and my current gear just won't cut it. I seem to catch regular 25-30cm squire, but want to be prepared for something bigger.

Any help would be great. Looking to spend about $200 but if it's not enough I'll go higher I guess.

Cheers

Yeah blokes at Tacklewarehouse have always been helpful to me. Plus there's always good second hand gear going on here, you've just got to keep an eye out.

As for a snapper setup, something in the range of maybe a pfleuger trion and shimano sienna perhaps? That should come in under budget.

if your fishing offshore i would suggest you go for a good qaulity overhead reel as most guys floatline for the big snapper this gives you a smooth drop and good feel when the snapper hit. i like around 40lb line to stop any brutes that come along when we're out there but even that sometimes won't stop the big kingies etc. i use circle hooks with most baits including pilchards, squid, cuttlefish and flesh baits along with the smallest sinker that you can get away with in the current so as it just doesn't hit the bottom and keeps feeding out. i also use a nice long rod around 7 to 8 feet long with a soft tip i hope this helps a bit
