Raby Bay Trevally

High all.

Am starting to feel a bit more mobile after having my burst appendix removed, and will be heading to my usual hunting grounds in the Raby Bay canals for some fishing this week.

So far I have worked out tricks so far for the Bream, Cod, and (unfortunatly) eel populations there and am starting to crack the Squire and Moses Perch too. But the Trevally continue to evade me. I have seen them in there either when they have been attacked by something or making their split-second blinding run at a school of baitfish then disapear as fast, and have heard of them being caught and sightings of large ones too.

But so far I have had no success on them at all. I have tried small and large poppers, live baits of herring, biddies, whitebait and mullet, flies, plastics, minnows, and metal slugs. I have been there on days when they are hitting the surface and I have cast near to the recent bust ups but still no trevally!!!

Has anybody had any luck at all on them in Raby bay?? How have you caught them? Baits, lures? Electrofishing???? I will happily share anything I have learnt about the bay if anybody wants to know, just shoot me a PM =).

Thanks in advance for any help!

we've been getting trevs on river2sea bubble pops and yozuri poppers since just before xmas. off rock walls tho at the seaways of tweed and southport, at sunrise mostly.

and last baitfishing session in broadbeach canals with live herring was also successful, altho that was at dusk.

so keep at it, they are definitely there

Thanks for the replies guys, it seems I'm doing the right thing I just need to be there when it happens then... Though I dont have any small walking lures, perhaps something to look at when I next have tackle money.

Will be good if they clear up a bit, will just stick to cod in the meantime I guess. Perhaps try the fabled Jack too....

Thanks all,

Jordan

Mate i live down at Cleveland too and often fish the canals. I have caught a Trevally in there only once, and that was actually on a very lightly weighted hardyhead i spun just beneath the surface, but they have to be rigged right so they swim straight. I have definitely seen big ones in there though, and have had a few follows but no hook-ups on smallish minnow style bream lures. I think natural colours work best in the canals as they are fished heavily and the fish are smartl they don't like poorly presented baits or unnatural colours, at least that's my experience anyway. I'm sure a few have been caught on bright lures too but i feel the natural colours work best.

Good luck mate, i hope a horse of a fish comes along and gives you a bit of stick :P
