Howdy all,

Was just wondering how-to, and whether its worth it; using say 300m of braid then 150m of mono?

Can this be done? especially seeing as the diam will be heaps different? I was thinking 50lb braid and 50lb monno.

Cheers for any info guys

mate, its called top-shotting a reel. normally used on larger big game reels such as International 50s, Tiagras, Tiburons and the like. the braid is packed in under so you get a largely increased line cap as compared to using mono of the same breaking strain. at the end of your mono you will have your usual shock leader setup still.

Most people used a specialized line loading machine for top shotting as you'll need to make sure that the braid is packed really tight to prevent bedding in. You can get away with doing it manually with another bloke, but it's really tiring work

if you intend to do this, DO NOT use 50 lb braid on top of 50 lb mono.. the reason is the mono has a large diameter, compared to the braid and the braid needs to be wrapped on tight and therefor would bed into your 50lb mono, and not release freely from the reel if it were to ever get down that far, i would be lookin at 20 lb mono as your backing, as your only looking to fill the spool as such, then have your braid fill the spool completely, and by all means run a leader off your braid, a few guys in the know use like a 5 - 10 mtr leader for the initial shock, cos if you can feel the fish, the fish can also feel you with braid , and a pre empted strike with little or no give will see you losing fish time n time again.
