GOLDY Canals. GH !

Couple of my friends and i decided to go fish the coast last night at around 9pm because we were bored. haha we headed to canals and wasnt expecting much. i tied on a switch blade first and started casting. first cast i was onto a nice little flatty. a couple minutes later i hear my friend scream im on, im on! and the fish started to jump out of the water. after 2mins of intense fighting he landed his first giant herring. within the next 30mins we have missed 6 and landed another two. all damage was done on swithblade. my friend also caught a 35cm whiting on bait which was a solid fish!. the rain started to pour so we decided it was a night.

before anyone ask we took the fish because our parents make good mince of it. haha

thanks for reading =D

Not having a go but they really are too good to kill, that and the fact that it's pretty easy to destroy a population of them considering the locations they're caught in.. Most of the time anyway. Nice work but

C'mon mate I'm sure they cook up good :woohoo: .

Nice GH session :). Were you jigging the switchblade deep? or running it near the surface?

Good fishing but i guess it is a shame to have kept them considering their merit as table fish is far from desirable.

Not going to get on the whole blame and shame post thing as I know you are completely entitled to keep them for a feed HOWEVER as far as i know there are WAY better fish to eat than GH( and especially to mince up!!)

sorry to get all 'green' but its an open forum and thats my 2 cents. cheers

Man pleasantries aside that is an absolute disaster in my opinion. Like live2fish said they are an easy fish to destroy a population of so if your that keen for mince catch Bream.

A real shame dude. Dog post.

why are GH more at risk of destroying a population than other speceis in the canals

GH have an enormous range and are notoriously difficult to catch. to destroy a population with 3 kept fish is laughable. and calling it a dog post chris? good work champ. i hope he stops reporting alltogether to rob you of your displeasure at others enjoyment.

Taking 3-4 fish/session for a month or two is an extremely fast way to destroy a population around here. Lower your tone.

so what most people are saying is giant herring are under threat? if so i didnt know and would have release them. im sorry if it did offend anyone in anyway. in future i will make sure to release them. this is a first for me taking them because my parents insisted. hahaha so please dont get too offended by my work.

pinkey: blades were worked by drop with quick lifts and sink to bottem. most the time they taking it on the drop.

FFS it's a sad day when some one gets abused like this for keeping a feed of fish that is neither rare or endangered.

Just because they are caught at their southern extremes does not make it a crime to keep them.

Maybe we should tell fisheries to include them in the pending endangered snapper closure along with trag, pearl perch and mahi mahi.

Nice fish eg_vtec.

very nice captures mate!! they are only rated as not fair eating because they are boney, would be interested to hear how they tasted as patties? :P:lol:

there is catch and release fishers and there is catch to keep fishers, there is lure fishers and there is bait fishers, there is boat fishers and there is land based fishers. all these fishers have their own opinion of each other, but i disagree with attacking a fellow afoer on the forum for keeping a feed even if it was minced , at least they were eaten and not wasted!!

I guess what we're talking about is mostly based on feelings. Some of us feel that catching multiple adult specimens of sportfish is a little greedy. Others feel that it's ok to bag out if they can. Whilst you may be entitled to there are lots of recreational anglers out there who will never take a) their full bag or B) a fish that is "worth" far more to catch than it is to eat. These values are personal and while I don't think that any permanent damage would be done to the population from taking just those three fish i have known many locations that used to fire that quite simply have been fished out by the white bucket brigade. I get upset when i see a boat full of fifty reefies as well but it's my beef and it's enough to make your feelings known in the hopes that you might influence people- i don't believe there is any need to insult or upset anyone.

Great catch Mate, good to see some quality fish being caught!!! Good report too, with the tips on retrieving the switchblades and such, it has given me some tips lol!!! Keep up the good work, and please continue to post reports, regardless of differing views, I for one appreciate them for what they are.

Cheers,

Ryan.

I'm with you Wes. They were taken to be eaten NOT wasted, so thumbs up and he only took three once, NOT three every day for two months. To the rest of the crew bad mouthing our fellow fisho for keeping a feed, back off, NOTHING illegal was done.

Man you caught the fish you can do whatever you like, just that most lure guys practice catch and release so your stepping on a lot of toes.

Keep the reports up!

Maybe killing the threadfin salmon in the river is stepping on some peoples toes as well.

I would say the population of threadies is far smaller and secluded than common old Giant Herring yet you feel it is ok to kill those large breeder threadies to eat.

GH are common along the entire QLD coast and occasionally turn up as far south as Port Macquarie in NSW.

I also do not understand why people think one type of fish is worth more than another.

I also have seen posts recently of people deliberately targeting these GH.

Do you really think that you are any better than someone catching them to eat.

It would be nice to know how many died after you sunk your treble hooks into them, tired them out and stressed them out so bad, removed them from the water to hold them up for pictures, twist them around for better pictures, drop them on a dry brag mat and push them about to again get decent pictures and then throw them back in the water all in the name of your C@R preservation of a RARE fish.

It makes me feel sick to see fishermen attacking another fisherman for doing the right thing.

Fishing is all about catching a feed of fresh fish and enjoying them.

*I dont target threadfin salmon, only ever caught one. Only ever kept one single fish.

I would say the population of threadies is far smaller and secluded than common old Giant Herring yet you feel it is ok to kill those large breeder threadies to eat.

*Again, only ever caught one so I cant comment. One thing though, apart from a couple recent reports - I've never seen any GH reports on here? Bar Chris' reports from a couple years ago?.. Kinda makes them seem not so common?

GH are common along the entire QLD coast and occasionally turn up as far south as Port Macquarie in NSW.

*Hey you probably know more about them than I do, only thing I can say is; again, I never see reports so that leads me to believe they're not common?

I also do not understand why people think one type of fish is worth more than another.

*Obviously some species are harder to catch than others therefore being able to catch that fish(and especially on lures[if your into that kinda thing] gives it more value than catching say a flathead?)

I also have seen posts recently of people deliberately targeting these GH.

[i*]To be honest i wasn't deliberately targetting them, it just seems that they are in one of the systems i fish at the moment. There are three recently about GH? Myself, eg_vtec and sweresy?

Do you really think that you are any better than someone catching them to eat.

*No, we all fish for different reasons and I already stated he caught it and can do whatever he wishes so long as he abides by DPI regulations.

*NONE have died. I take great care to handle fish gently and with the GH i had them out of the water for 30 seconds max. QUickly beach, snap snap - didnt even bother with brag mat. Gently de-hook and they're off swimming away again no worries. Don't know where your getting your information about from removing them from the water and holding them up for pictures and twisting them etc?

It makes me feel sick to see fishermen attacking another fisherman for doing the right thing.

*In what way did i attack him? I actually know him personally and stated two things - firstly its sad to see them dead because i have a great appreciation for that species. And secondly that he caught it and therefore can do whatever he wishes with it.

Fishing is all about catching a feed of fresh fish and enjoying them.

*Fishing is not only about just catching a feed. I enjoy trying to catch different species on lures just for the fight and rarely if ever keep any. I do enjoy fresh fish as well as other seafood but i find it naieve to think that we all go out there to catch and keep[/u ]a feed

Please don't try to attack me mate, just trying to have a civil conversation and for you to come out and say all those things just doesn't seem right.

Please don't delete this Brian/Henry/Kriso/Gus/Johnny.. But i find it unfair if he can come out and have a go and me and not be able to stand up for myself.

Thanks again and no bad blood Nhan, you didn't know and now you do so no harm done because they were actually being kept for a feed. Hope they were nice :woohoo:

*wave*

If a fish is caught and no one hears about it, did it really happen?

This site would be redundant if no one shares. I had a similar experience on another site for keeping a jack but things settled down so please keep it up and don't be put off by what has happened here.

I don't know much about GHs but kudos for catching 3 in one session as it seems quite a feat.
