Here is a detailed account of my Cobia caught on light gear - Heartland 6-14lb rod matched to a Heartland XA153HSTA Bait caster spooled with only 100yards of 30lb Fins and 1m 30lb FC Rock leader, a ball sinker size 0 to 4/0 Mustard Red Baitholder with fresh Squid cut into strips was used as bait. (You don’t need big hooks to catch big fish if you play them out plus you get better hook-ups although my hook was bent a bit but I just worked within its limits)

The fish smashed my bait and I got a solid hook-up. It went on a blistering unstoppable run breaking the surface with some acrobatics. We quickly realised this was a cracking fish and my mate knew immediately to pull anchor because he also knew that I was working with only 100 yards of line. He quickly started the motor and was chasing this monster out 300m in to the channel perfectly to my directions, just in time as I was down to no more than 10m of line on my spool.

I Got back 50m of line and was able to start to try and turn his head back to the boat and try to fatigue this beast. After turning his head and doing small quick continuous pumps to keep his head that way, I was able to get him up in the water column which he did not like so he went for another breach and another blistering run.

With my mate driving my boat we kept up with him heading further into the bay. After that he was tired but was staying deep and every time he saw the boat he smoked off again down into the depths.

After about 20mins of him taking me around the boat and my mate doing everything he could to clear my path we were getting to crunch time when most fish are lost. I backed my drag off and had him 2m out from the boat about a meter deep. My mate had the gaff ready but when the fish saw it come at him he would take 3m of line.

First gaff shot was at gills but missed. Now no stuffing around he went for a gut gaff and Cobia was on the deck.

It took over 45mins to land this fish and was pure excitement and jubilation for both me and my mate as it was a team effort (Thanks Adam).

Greatest sport I have had and my left arm and wrist especially is still very sore as I type report.

I will keep trying to upload pics once the glitch is fixed. Keep a look out!

Thanks for reading hope you enjoyed.

:woohoo:
