Whitsundays popping/reef combo.

Heading up to the whitsundays for a week sometime early winter, so im thinking i will need a new combo...

I am looking to find something that is big enough to pop for trevally and still viable to use for coral trout and other reefies. These are the reels im thinking of at the moment, looking at around 500 all up for the combo without line.

Ajiking wahoo 8000:

Daiwa saltist:

tuff tackle 6000

I have little to no idea on what rods are good for these sorts of fish, preferably around 7ft and 2 piece is preferable.

this one looks alright, any idea where i could have a feel of tufftackle gear in brisbane?

Any input appreciated.

Cheers

are you gonna fish the outer reef at all?

that daiwa would be my choice. theres just something about daiwa eggbeaters these last few years, sexy stuff.

i've done a few whitsunday trips over the years and found 20lb line to be more than enough for spinning and poppering. even a drop to 15lb on the last trip would have still beaten the tuna we found.

is that rod beefed up for land based fishing? good length tho

I've used the Daiwa before and it was really good :)

I used it trolling the rocky headlands off curtis island up north and it knocked over some big gold spot cod up to 15kg with ease. The reel is a little heavy but with the weight comes a very sturdy, reliable reel.

hope this helps

Alright cheers for the feedback, i like the look of the saltist and 30kg drag suits me because im up for a strength battle between me and a GT:D

i dont know muc about the rod other than i prefer them around the 7ft mark and that one looked pretty beefcake.

Not sure about fishing the outer reef, depends how far out it is/weather/what others want to do ebcause ill be on a catamaran.

This saltist 6500 and monster mesh popping rod is a great deal and would be mad for what you want to use it for.

I remember reading something about the monster mesh being a rod that failed a fair bit, was this ever rectified?

i dont mind the extra length, would make for a huge casting distance.

yeah they fail, i use a repaired monster mesh from charltons, it has stood up so far its a 3-6pe 7 ft that broke the join in the handle, charltons has made it a one piece. what about the Tcurve GT rod?

  • 2 weeks later...

Only just noticed the link for the ebay saltist, thats excellent cheers.

Will i be able to find big enough punks on the inner reefs to give this combo a workout or would i be better off with some 20lb gear as you said?

I've never targetted gt's or popped for anything besides jacks and bream.

i remember a kid a cuppla years back here asking the same questions, you maybe able to find his report. they had a larger boat and weren't chartered so they ventured outside the bareboat limits to the inside of the outer reef and scored some really really good fish.

*edit* heres that above mentioned post http://www.australianfishing.com.au/component/kunena/80-north-queensland-reports/204047-whitsunday-photos#204047

makes me wanna go back

you'll never know whats there until ya go really. i wish i'd had 15lb line thinking back as nothing really challenged my 20lb line and i used an overhead with 40lb at night for sharks.

i used a 7foot penn power something or other rod and a 6000 sized spinning reel with a spare 30lb spool and have still never used that spool.

in the three bareboating trips we did, a few tuna, a nice shark and a real nice broad barred mack were taking while trolling x-raps around the place.. blue and the white with red head ones seems to be the good ones.

at night sharks were caught by the truckload under a balloon bait. we caught many tuna by just slowing down near surface action when we were going from one anchorage to another and using tiny metal lures. my mate also got a nice golden trev and a really nice coral trout both of a few kgs on river2sea poppers, which annoyed me as i didn't get anything. he was casting at every single bit of fringing reef we encountered. bottom fishing at night is a mixed bag, you'll get anything from sweetlip to red emperor of varied sizes

take it by ear until you get blasted by something :D

Thanks for digging that up, i would be working hard to get onto any tuna i could if i saw them.

Sounds like i should just pack a rod for every category, im thinking something like:

one big baitrunner(6500) on a 8-10kg shimano rod, a 6-10kg drop shot with a 4000twinpower for tuna, tld15 with a short buff rod for trolling, maybe a 2-5kg tcurve with 2500 sol on it and then hopefully the saltist and whatever rod i decide on, that seems to cover most bases.

Glad im driving up otherwise id never fit the gear in...
