Condolences to his family, friends and team mates. From what I have heard, Hal was taken off life support this evening. He suffered extensive injuries in a game at GPS. Apparently suffered a heart attack, and required resuscitation, but was unable to breathe independently.

is very sad but jords are you sure on your info

Mate this is what I have heard from boys who play with him - apparently it hasn't been revealed to the media, just saw it on the news that his condition is still listed as critical, but condolence messages have been appearing on his fb, meaning that I'd say they haven't released it to the media yet....

Ok, he was pronounced brain dead last night, but apparently the family has help off switching off life support until his girlfriend returns from overseas

The family of Queensland rugby player Halley Appleby will farewell the 21-year-old before switching off his life support machine today, a police spokesman told ninemsn.

The University of Queensland Rugby Football Club forward was pronounced brain dead yesterday afternoon after suffering a brain haemorrhage during a premier grade match against home side GPS at Ashgrove on Saturday afternoon.

Queensland Rugby said the player lost consciousness after being tackled. There were also reports he suffered a spinal fracture.

Nine News earlier reported that Mr Appleby's family turned off his life support last night.

But it is now understood the family is waiting for Mr Appleby's girlfriend to return from overseas before taking that step, the Courier Mail reports.

Mr Appleby's condition deteriorated in the Royal Brisbane Hospital's intensive care unit last night and it was deemed his injuries were deemed too severe.

The hospital is declining to comment.

Queensland Rugby doctor Greg Smith, who is the Queensland Reds' team doctor, was off duty and watching the game from the sidelines. He was among the medical team that administered CPR before Mr Appleby was taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital by ambulance.

He said he had never seen an accident similar to this, and was quoted as describing the incident as an "exceptional event".

The University of Queensland Rugby Club is also declining to comment, posting a message on its website reading: "UQ Rugby Club would like to thank all clubs and individuals for the on-going messages of support for Halley and the Appleby family … Our thoughts and prayers remain with Halley and the Appleby family."

RIP :(

Very sad news Jords. Ben played with him in the U18 and U19 rep sides a few years ago and knew him very well. Ben is quite down this morning - makes his Grade 3 liagament tear usuffred last weekend pale into insignificance. At least Ben will be back on the paddock in 6-9 months time.

RIP.
