Supercheap/BCF/Ray's now own Rebel and Amart

Heard on the weekend that the Supercheap group of companies (Supercheap, BCF, Rays Outdoors) recently acquired the company that owns Rebel Sport and Amart Allsports.

Hard to imagine that this will do good things to retail prices of fishing gear. Up till now Amart and BCF were competing for customers and keeping each other somewhat honest. What odds that fishing departments will disappear from Amart over the next year or so?

I hope it doesn't but I have a feeling it will.

yeah, I didnt think there were really any significant fishing stocks in amart allsports for a good while?

Amart definitely had already reduced the amount of stores that had fishing gear, and then the amount of gear that those stores kept. But there were still a core group of stores (approx 9) that had fishing stock and fishing specialists working them. For how long that continues remains to be seen.

All the more reason to support the local guys that can offer some real knowledge (not that bcf etc cant, but i find more often than not the are shelf stackers not fisherman or boaties).

Local shops may not have the crazy specials or a reel might cost you $10 more, but you can see the writing on the wall, once these big companies manage to wipe 90% of the competition out prices will go up dramatically. Look at fuel nowdays, very few independents left in the cities, no competition at all.

Now that is a serious slice of the outdoor and leisure market right there.

Poo poo for competition :woohoo:

This is one of the reasons we have resisted all attempts by the big guys to stock some of our products. They will bastardise the prices on 1 or 2 items and really make it hard for the independents. We deal solely with the independants so that they can still make a living.
