Hi guys,

Went a little crazy today and decided to get into soft plastic fishing due to the influence of a couple of mates. I've been toying around with the idea the last week and did a bit of research and bought some gear today. So for a toal novice I blew way too much money :-)

I ended up buying the follwoing;

G Looomis DSR820 S Rod

Shimano Stradic 2500FJ Reel

Firewire green fluro 6lb braid

Platypus Pretest 6kg line for use as leader

assorted plastics

We started at the Myrtletown rd bridge about 4pm and within 1 minute one of us had a Goldspotted rockcod which was a keeper. We thought we were going to have a great sesson but we only got a couple of hits after then it went quiet. Drove up the dirt road which goes to marine drive road that seems to service the powerlines and very quiet however I managed to get a flatty but lost it as I saw it close to shore.

otherwise not much happening and we packed it in about 6:30pm after moving along the river finishing at the substation.

Still yet to catch my first fish on plastics :whistle:

Well the fishermans Creek session was a wipeout. Fished from 5:30am till 7:30 on the run out and got 1 small hit, otherwise nothing. Tried under the bridge then worked my way towards creek opening on city side and even near the pontoon but absolutely dead. Tried different jig weights and a couple of different plastics (minnows and sqidgys) but no takers.

Plenty of Mullet jumping though.

Here's some tips for ya mate.

1. Ditch the platypus pretest as leader and get some flurocarbon leader. Try yamatoyo or sunline brands but for something cheaper you could get berkley vanish.

2. 6kg is probably to heavy for what you're doing. Grab some 4 or 6lb maybe 8lb max if you don't like the lighter stuff. BUT the lighter leader will definately get you more bites!!! (you can land some big fish on light stuff)

3. Match your plastics to the lightest jighead possible for the conditions. I don't know how fast you're fishing but make sure you fish your plastics slow and hug the bottom.

Give these tips a go and let us know how you go.

cheers
