It’s normal to beware of wildlife crossing the street in rural areas — but salmon?

Flooding throughout Washington State has turned streets into streams where salmon valiantly struggle to return to their birthplaces to spawn.

Drivers made their way slowly along Puget Sound's Skokomish Valley Road as they watched and filmed the fish thrash about.

Fishing expert and TV host Conway Bowman said that during floods salmon go wherever the river flows.

“This can happen when high water correlates with the spawning season,” Mr Bowman told The Huffington Post.

Once the salmon make it back to their place of birth they readapt to fresh water and lay their eggs.

They usually die within a week of spawning.
