Part 1.

It had been way too long since i had a fish..I was at schoolies for the week & i didnt bring my rod, so i knew that fishing was on order first thing back..After being caught up with uni, & various different things, last night was the first fish i had had in nearly 2 weeks. It was time to "GET BACK AT IT"!

Had a good feeling about heading out as i was yet to donut there within the last 15 or 20 so trips & mostly because i had purchased acouple more vibes, a pack of smaller 3" squidgies flick baits & stinger sp hooks, which would hopefully assist in improving my catch.

Tide was late, i decided to go for a solo fish & left home at 12:45am & arrived at my favourite BR Haunt at approximatly 1:20am. Upon arrival i could see fish getting smashed up constantly about 5-6m from shore, I knew they were greenback tailor chasing schooling mullet around. I decided to target the tailor whilst they where in the feeding mode before chasing school jew later on.

First option was to flick a 'Frenzy FS6-S' around close to shore & see if i couldnt land one of the greenies..3rd cast in, i was rapidly retrieving whist twitching & about half way in i got a solid hit, as soon as i hooked up, this fish went airborne, LITERALLY about 30-50cm out of the water, talk about arial tailor, this beaut was jumping like barra, it was quite a sight to see. After a good solid fight with half a dozen leaps for freedom and about 3minutes later i carefully manouvered him to shore & managed this decent 47cm BR Greenback Tailor.

Beaut looking BR Tailor going 47cm.

Hookup shot with the Frenzy FS6-S doing the damage.

After half adozen more casts with the Frenzy, i knew it was time to change to another lure due to the fact fish easily spot a bad lure once its caught a fish..

It was time to chuck on the real deal this time, 3" squidgie flick bait with alittle scent on a 1/4ounce jig, erratic twitching at a medium/fast retrive would pretty much secure another tailor. 2nd cast in, after the 2nd twitch i started the speedy retrieve i got hit on the surface as the sp went out of the water, was another great sight..i was onto yet another tailor, this one came in quite quick though, in less then a minute & on his own will he jumped onto shore like there was no tommorrow..41cm BR tailor was his size..not bad from the BR if you ask me.

healthy looking small 41cm BR Tailor.

Part 2.

after landing the small 41cm BR tailor, i knew i could atleast pull one more out with a newly replaced 3" flick bait. After about 6casts in i felt a hit, but it didnt connect, so i continued the twitch/speedy retrive & got hit about 4m from shore.

This one had some fight to him..he started a husain bolt run out to deeper water taking about 15m of line in one run before realising, his feeding days where all but over..got him to shore in a comfortable 3minutes but the amazing thing was when i did, he started thrashing his head & bits of bait flew out of his mouth, a small sliced mullet & a 2 part bitty was his dinner earlier. was quite funny, his mum musnt have told him the eat with your mouth closed rule..and he went 45cm on the ruler.

BR Tailor goes 45cm on the ruler.

Goshh! eat with your mouth closed please!!

post-9733-144598721275_thumb.jpg

after grog vomit by the looks of things.

post-9733-144598721228_thumb.jpg

All this action happened in a 20minute time frame...The tailor then started going off the bite, & about 15casts later i knew it was time to start chasing the school jewies.

I attatched one of the white kato vib65 lures & started the slow retrieving, on the 2nd cast i manged a very solid hit with a split second hookup, but i didnt strike as thats how i would normally catch the schoolies, that was my mistake, he spat it & was gone in a split second. After another 10cast i managed to catch myself a free sp & jig, perfect!!

After that lucky incident i knew it was time to change, i put on a 5" squigies flick bait with a 1/2 jig, but for the 1st time i decided to add a stinger hook to it just incase those tailor started hitting the tails again like candy.

after afew casts & re-adjusting the stinger hook i was on!

i immediatly felt the fish on the stinger hook instead of the jig..i was just glad i had the stinger hook on, who knows this fish couldve been a tail biter. After a 5minute wrestle i managed to land this healthy small school jew which went 43cm on the stick.

school jews on stinger hook.

stinger hook works a treat (Gamakatsu Twinex Stinger Rig size 2)

post-9733-144598721254_thumb.jpg

After that action on the stinger, i was feeling confident in catch atleast 1 more jew. I changed back to the white Kato Lure & about 5 casts in i cracked the lure cleanly down the middle on the shoreline due to a dodgey cast.....My luck didnt get any better when i chucked on the green tiger Kato vib, i got a massive hit which i think was a cod, my lure had been absolutely crushed!!! the eye was missing & the whole lure was cracked a full 360degrees. I was devistated, both losing a very solid fish & throwing $20 down the drain..

I was feeling a downer, but thought id give my good ol faithful 2 1/2" gulp shrimp in banana prawn colour on a 1/2ounce a go, there was no action for about 5minutes, but unexspectedly on a full speed cast upon the sink, i started the 1st twitch & i was on!! for about a good 4minutes this fish was taking 2-3 short 10m burst runs down deep, i immiediatly thought jewie, but because it hit right on the floor bed i was having doubts, to my joy, it was a solid flattie, he ended up going 52cm & home for the dinner table, although my camera had died at the stage i managed to take acouple of shots when i got home.

nice 52cm flattie

mmmm..flathead fillets crumbed with chips, lemon & tartare sauce was on the menu for lunch!!

After about another 10flicks i decided to call it a night, upon leaving quite a number of people started heading down to the BR hot spot, not sure how they went but it looked like it started getting a tad packed..i ended up in bed by 3:45am, beating the sunrise a full 20mintues..

Hope you enjoy my report as much as i did putting it together.

thanks for reading,

Moses Nguyen :)

Ridiculous action! And man you must be a night owl going fishing at those times. Are you a shift worker or something?

Top session.
