Kayakers drown in Port Phillip Bay

Scope

Recommended Posts

people new to kayaing taking it out to sea first time... not a good idea.

I've heard stories of a guy who trolls with kayak just off noosa;

he caught a fish and decided to hook it up beside the seat, hammerhead had a go at him

lucky my mate's boat was nearby and spooked the shark off or he'd prolly be in the drink with a nasty predator.

They were both wearing l/jackets. How does that happen so quick ? :blink:

I was thinking the same thing until I checked seabreeze for Melbourne readings yesterday. The fools went out without looking at the forecast.

It went from a few knots to twenty knots in minutes. Some parts of the bay gusted 35-40knots. Kayakers usually wear PFD2's I wonder if a good PFD1 would have helped? (I realise PFD1's are usually to bulky and uncomfortable for yakking).

I was once caught out in a 25-30knot westerly near tangalooma in a boat (foolishness) and it was very unpleasant, borderline scary. In a kayak it probably wouldn't have been survivable.
