Great Northern Brewing Co.

hey guys,

ive driven from brissy to the goldie and back a few times in the last 2 weeks and each time ive noticed the massive advert with a guy holding onto a heavy trolling setup bent over, fishing what i can only speculate as a marlin. and i speculate this because right next to him is a stubby with a Marlin on it, labelled "Great Northern Brewing Co."

Great-Northern-Stubby.jpg

being a fishing nut, that advert pushed the right buttons and i had to go try it...

so i bought myself a stubby one hot afternoon... took a swig... finished it... then proceeded to buy a carton

on first impression, it was crisp, easy to drink, tasted good, and oh so refreshing on that hot afternoon.

naturally i went to read up on it. heres an extract from the CUB press release:

"Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) has answered the call as to what Queensland beer lovers want by announcing it will launch a new Queensland beer that will roll into stores from 1 November (2010)."

"CUB Queensland General Manager and a creator of Great Northern Brewing Co. Cameron Levick said the new beer was a Queensland idea, formulated locally and specifically for Queenslanders."

"CUB has brought together local brewers, industry experts and beer drinkers to help create the quintessential Queensland brew, one that captures the Queensland adventure of sun, sand and fishing."

"With summer just around the corner, Queensland drinkers will want a bottle of super crisp, refreshing and easy drinking lager in their hands and the Great Northern Brewing Co. delivers just that."

"Great Northern Brewing Co. was named in tribute to CUB's first ever Queensland based brewing operation, the Great Northern Brewery in Cairns acquired in 1931. Back then, beer was made locally for locals. The brewery has since gone, but the concept of drinking local made beer lives on in Great Northern Brewing Co."

having now polished off more than half of the carton. here are my thoughts.

its a VERY clean crisp lager... it tastes sweet to the palate and VERY easy to drink... on a hot day its not hard to down 3-4 stubbies in quick sucession because of how drinkable it is. its not as flavourful and impactful as the beer im used to drinking, namely James Squire ales, Fat Yak, Kirin, etc... but then again those are a different genre of beer, as reflected in price.

At $40 a carton, the Great Northern is easy on the pocket, great for parties or fishing trips where quantity is just as important as quality. Its UBER refreshing, and with the onset of summer, just what queensland needs i reckon. it definately lives up to its claim as a "Super Crisp Lager". :woohoo:

PLUS ITS GOT A FREAKING MARLIN AS ITS LOGO SO IT WINS HANDS DOWN!

its a new beer, launched last year in nov by Carlton United Breweries to take on XXXX and try to break its monopoly. i strongly recommend this beer to you guys, partly because its a great beer, and partly because i think XXXX sucks

so throw in some support for it guys, i know i am going to... and maybe somewhere down the line it may even become one of the sponsors for AFO and AFO's official beer :woohoo:

cheers guys thanks for the read

Exactly you can't go wrong with a beer with a marlin as it's logo!!

I see this billboard daily to on the drive to uni and it sparks many a dreams of game fishing the north on a big boat, with big gear, chasing even bigger fish! :D

Big fan of this beer when I got it in a mixed christmas promotional sampler pack or something last year, good stuff.

As a general rule I don't drink beer in from clear bottles as none taste any good.

I'll give 'em a go... But only for you.

I love beer too much. Gosser <3

As a rule, I never drink anything from a coloured bottle!  . I also got onto Great northern last year for the BCF vouchers, and have downed plenty of cartons since!

Nothing wrong with it but it pales in comparison to other offerings often available on special like boags or grolsch or even becks.

i agree with you mate. Great Northern is good. Boag's, Squire, etc are better.

but then again they are a different class of beer, as reflected in standard retail price.

but theres something strangely satisfying about drinking a bottle with a marlin on it

Agreed, finished the 6 pack, the marlin on the bottle was cool and have now moved onto a couple of rums. The missus is finding my commentary on the chick flicks that she is watching "inapropriate" but I personally think my commentary on her choice of movies is rather funny. I'll blame it on the marlin tomorrow, its far less ponsy than that vampire dude in the movie she's watching :cheer:
