Fluff Chucking from the yak

Recommended Posts

A mate and I have just purchased a fly combo each and are planning on giving it a good crack from the kayak and was wondering does anyone else on here actually fly fish from a kayak and what sort of success do you have. Plus were going to make up a list of species to target and tick them off as we go, now I just need to learn how to cast past the front of the yak.

Cheers

A mate and I used to fly fish out of my 16 ft canoe one of us at each end casting at the same time in all directions. Only once did I get a fly in my arm. We were only fishing upper Brisbane river for mullet and far with small white flies but would go to colleges sometimes and get amongst some tarpon they are great fun catching this way. As for out of a yak as long as you feel comfortable standing up on it it should be a lot of fun. I do not think I would try it from my mini X though as it is only short .

A lot of blokes like the shorter specialised rods for Yak fishing. Either the Samurai Tom Thumb or the Sage Bass series of rods. They load very quickly so you don't have to have a lot of line out, and being short makes it easier to battle fish close to the yak.

Obviously if you want to learn more about this secret society of fluffers come on down to one of our meetings sometime.

Have a look at this guy Nick (affectionately known as The CodFather ) slaying 'em down in New England. Note that he does one backcast and punches the fly right into heavy territory.
