Hook Brands-Your Opinion

RUSSIAN

Hi guys, I am wondering what kind of hook brands do you trust your fishing with. When ever my Dad and I get a fish that spits the hook, he is always on my case about not having any circle hooks. 'Oh why don't you have any circle hooks Anthony? If you did, we would have had that fish and known what it is.' Me: ' I do have circle hooks, only 6/0s.' Dad: 'Not good enough, we going to get a heap more, and of different sizes.'

Me: 'Fine, fine, but you're payin' ;) ' So Dad and I are looking at some bulk value circle hook packs, and were wondering what brands you guys use. I have found a bulk pack of 100 for only about $15, which I find toooo cheap, as my 6/0 cirlce hooks I payed $25 for 50 (Gamakatsu brand). The link below will show you what I mean, and have found.

Your input would be greatly appriciated

Cheers Anthony ;)

Ps- Dad is finally been out on a few dudes boat's and is actually now looking around for one! :woohoo: :woohoo:

I personally like the owner hooks you can get them in the lighter gage for fishing the river as well as the heaver gage which are good for using large live baits out side for thing like KING's (yellow and black),big snapper and Samson fish or the like.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Knowledged gained:

1. Must take into account the target species as it's no point using the smaller guage hooks for sharks and tuna, ect.

2. The good brands: Gamakatsu, Owner Hooks, Mustad and Black Magic.

Also, has anyone looked at the hooks the hooks that are attached to the link I have provided in my earlier post? If so, can someone comment and give their opinion if they are worth buying? Personaly, they look a bit cheap.....

Thanks

Cheers Anthony ;)

In the past i've bought bulk circle hooks online and haven't really seen anything wrong with them.

They are great value for money but don't expect them to be gammas.

They do what they're supposed to and i can't really fault them, however if you were targeting big fish i would always use owner or gamma just for that extra assurance.

From the link you've put up they seem to resemble black magic's KL circle hook design.

i dont trust the octopus circles from gamakatsu now that i straightened one on an 80cm jew. pretty sure it was a 6/0 or 7/0

The shogun mutu circles are tough imo, the Owners are reasonable but expensive.

I also got a ocuple packs of circles off ebay 100hooks for 5$ delivered if you bid at the right auction.

I prefer mustad wipe gape or Gamakatsu Shiners. The mustads you can pick up at Big W for $3 a pack, the shiners are hard to find but have a larger eye than the mustads.

I've also bought from the US on ebay, extremely good prices, good quality hooks, usually VMC or eagle claw. Buy generic ones on ebay as well, this bloke's australian, recently got 100 size 4 circle hooks delivered to the door for about $9. As good as any other hook to use.

Having read your account of straightening a gamma octopus circle earlier and am still amazed. Must have been a dud hook or hooked into bone in such a way that most of the force was in the direction of opening the gape. Have heard of this happening with heavy duty game fishing hooks.

I have landed some insane sized AJ's on octopus circles and the closest I got to straightening them was with locked up drags on 80lb braid. Ever so slightly opened. I am talking 30kg plus fish. Have battled plenty of 2m+ sharks in 80m deep water with heavy drag settings with no issues.
