Mullet Lure

Ok I'll put it out there although I reckon I might get flamed  my favourite all time spot holds bulk large mullet like well over 40cm, thousands of them and I've been thinking if I get a fly rod I could have a bit of fun as I've heard of guys getting them on fly. Here comes the dumb question........in the meantime is there any type of fly/lure I can pick up from bcf that would be effective and usable on bream gear?

The large mullet are usually Bully mullet (aka sea mullet) and generally do not respond to bait or lures as they feed on algae and other gunk like that.

They will very rarely though grab a bait or small lure but not to the extent where you would ever bother targeting them.

The smaller mullet though like flat tails are great fun on fly or bait.

I used to catch them on small nymph patterns and if you tie some flies to look like a ball of dough you can do real well on the flat tails.

Often I could fill the bait tank very quickly with flat tails on fly when they were not actively feeding on the baits.

Mate, most fly orientated shops will sell flies that resemble bread and algae purely for chasing mullet. MOTACKLE sell them online here's the link:

If this fails then simply make your own. You can even use white bread wrap it around a fly hook, make sure that the hook point is exposed leave it in the sun to harden then tie it on and cast away.

When I was a young bloke learning to fly fish, me and a mate use to catch bully mullet in a lagoon on the Gold Coast using bread imitation flies. We would burly up the water and then cast into the school. They are great fun to catch when you are learning.

As for mullet not taking lures, I have caught them and ludrick on SP's and hardbodies.

Thanks for the ideas guys, they are what I call diamond or sea mullet but I'm no expert so they may not be, when I was a kid I used to use cotton wool wrapped around a small hook and rub it in a paste of water and self raising flour and yeast, an old guy told me the mullet is attracted to yeast. Caught a few back then under a float. Might try an unweighted small hook on 4lb fluoro.
