12/05 offshore and bay tuna.

Went out with TerryH trying to raise a few scales around the rock early yesterday, left the ramp around 5am in the morning and only got back there 430pm or so. was a big day out.

Ended up burning through 2kg of pillies and only had a few snapper around 30-35 come up, a couple grassy looking things that were 20-25cm between boat rock and middle reef, got hit up a couple times by something bigger but no hookup/i fumbled one and dropped it.

Got bored around 11 or 12 and headed out to the sevens for a look at something a bit different.

After a couple drifts i tied a damiki 5inch plastic on and cast it ahead of the drift letting it sink whilst i sorted my bait rod out. Saw a couple taps and then picked it up and twitched it a bit, must have been close to the bottom so i cranked it up fast and half way in up 25m of water i hooked up to something solid. At first it was heading straight down so i though GT or cod but i slowed it down it started taking some good runs and i cranked the drag up a bit to slow it down.

10mins or so later this pops up and i am happy to at least have the drag pulled for a while and a solid sized shark bait.

it coughed up three of these

Terry had been quick on it and marked the point of the drift that we hooked up so we lined it up again and ripped plastics up from the bottom in hope of more drag pulling action on a slow day.

Terry got hit by a 35cm mack tuna and cranked it up pretty fast. tempted to put it back down alive but we didnt...

Got tired of the perfect conditions offshore and came back inside the bay, bar was very easy both ways.

I went to my usual spot where the longtail have been hanging out and chased them around a bit and then they popped up 25m from the front of the boat whilst we were idling and were feeding thick on the surface. We both get perfect casts on the school and Terry hooks up to a solid longtail which put up a solid fight. ended up around 105cm on the mat and 26pound on the scales

I got 5+ casts on the same school while they were still feeding close and could not raise any hits from them with the same jighead, same size plastic in a zmans not a snapback and same leader. damn longies elude me again.

We chased them for a while whilst everyone else who was offshore went straight past them. Eventually tiring and a bit pinker called it in at 4ish and headed home.

Terry was kind enough to split the longtail with me, the family and i ate a fair chunk of it last night and theres still 2kg+ in the fridge.

Was a nice day offshore but the rock was obviously missing its master.

Cheers.

Well done on the tuna bro.

Atleast your seeing them. I have only seen one school in bay in past 5 trips n they were bloody mac tuna.i needa come out with one day and see where the tuna come up.

Use assari 18 grams lol no tuna can resist it.

Man we got our snapper on mac tuna fillets caught day before. Our pillchards were still frozen when we got to the rock. I sent a whole one down during the day and i got smoked.

I was going to post report but my fone doesnt connect to laptop to take photos out.

Il post big report of my trips once i get it sorted.

I looked for the asari but i couldnt find it i think they were sold out.

had a couple follows and splashes reallly close behind it but still no big hit.

Ive thought about dragging a yak out and anchoring the boat up a couple hundred metres away for some stealth...

Yeah that was us you were in the black tinnie with the Daiwa shirt? Boat rock was busy but i still hooked a Mac tuna which had a large shark up its date but i ended up bending the hook trying to drag it in before it got taxed.

Cheers

Nice day out boys was there much current offshore?

Not much current in the morning but it picked up during the day.we were using size 1 sinkers. The fish came on the bite so well real early. We were on every drop. Could only get a few up rest reefed us or didnt hook on properly. As soon as the boats rocked up it totally shut down.

You know that reef you guys were drifting over with Seff and Brad before we left last time a bit wide of the rock. We got 2 snaps there just before leaving. The show on the sounder was exactly the same as when we went out and got the big snaps. We floated a few pillies on it and got smoked.

Fishing there was really hard with so many boats around.

Yeah that was me lol. I was goint to come say hello but you guys all had your lines out. Sick boat you guys got. Looks really spacious. How big is the motor.

I count 14 boats there in the morning lol. Spots good during weekday or real early.

Yeah there was a few jellybean tuna really close to the rock. I thought it was because Eddie threw out so much burley out. They had birds all over them at one stage.

Cheers

Mark

Ah, missed this post!

Cheers for the trip out Jeremy.

Bit of a bummer being so quiet in the morn. There were a lot of boats out though, and a lot more current than I'm used to dealing with off Caloundra!

The tuna were a real pain in the backside. Not sure how you missed them Shane, they were everywhere :D When we first rocked up, after about 15 minutes we found ourselves in the thick of longies going nuts all around the boat, a well placed cast and the pink snapback was demolished... well.. it was taken, but no real fight went on...

I remember Jeremy asking if I needed the net or gaff...

And then it saw the boat...

Then I finally felt its proper first run, and I didn't see the fish for another 15-20 minutes.

Just before filleting it went 12kg - so not too bad on a 20lbs outfit. I'm not sure I had the drag as tight as I could go though, but still, wasn't bad!

I simply love the pink snapback for the longies. I thin kI would only use a slug for if I can't get close enough to sling the plastic out at them. That plastic used on that longtail had been rigged on jighead, and out of the packet for a good 4-5 months (at least!). So they don't go dry and ruined out of the packet :)

After my longie though, we spent the next hour or two with me behind the wheel trying to get Jeremy onto one, but the tuna seemed to stay down more than up. There was an amazingly large amount of bait. Perhaps some trolling would have got them, but oh well. Despite being quite flighty, I thought we got into some good spots, and I can't even remember how many times Jeremy had a cast that I thought should have been on the money, but alas only a couple of tail hits at best.

I'd be itching to get up to caloundra on the weekend though and bag some in the kayak!

Its just me man. I never see anything that side of bay lol. I dont know that side of the bay well. Everytime i go there i tend to stuck lol. so shallow around there.

Im going to give it a crack this weekend and next week. Hopefully i can find them.

Are you using 5 inch snap backs?

I caught alot of tuna and mackerel on 5 inch bubble gum z-man streaks.

Caught a few on Damiki 5 inch skin blue Amor shads but they rip too easily.

I got a few of those new Jackals plastics. I want to give them a go. Have you seen them. They look pretty cool.

Shane.

Haven't seen the Jackal plastics. To be honest, I cant remember the last time I ventured into a tackle store and looked at new products. Bit sad really :(

It is the 5 inch snapbacks, although the 7s are suppose to work pretty well too - I've been told the key to those ones is to almost keep them out of the water, with only the tails along the surface!

The snapbacks are almost indestructible. I'm sure that one pink one has caught me a few longies now :)

Fantastic result for a slow day fishing wise. I was out in the same area on the same day and struggled to get a keeper so well done.

Highligt of the day was my deckie hooking a 80 odd kg Marlin on a 7" Jerkshad which was the first fish hooked on his new Branzino. Busted him off on the first jump.

Cheers,

Steve

Hey Terry, see you on the water this saturday hopefully.

I love catching them in the yak, they just bring you for a nice cruise lol

hey mate, wont be going until Sunday or perhaps Monday.

Although Sunday is probably out of the question - I've got a yak, but don't have a set of wheels to get me places at the moment.
