Catfish Fever at UQ

The missus had a meeting at UQ this morning and I decided I would throw a rod in the vehicle and spend a couple of hours wetting a line while she did her thing.

The fishing was a bit slow on the bottom of the tide, but I avoided a doughnut with a few catfish. Now normally, I would not put up a report about slimy catfish, but early on when it looked like all I was going to get was some relaxation and sunshine something very amusing happened that made today report worthy.

When I first hit the water, the current was running very fast, so I put on a good sized sinker and chucked a prawn out with 8 lb fireline and 8 lb platypus mono as a leader. As the current started slowing down, I figured I would put on a smaller sinker so brought in my line and had the hook and prawn sitting on the rocks as I went to clip off the line above the swivel.

All of a sudden, something comes TEARING out of the rocks, runs over my feet and grabs the line out of my hand! I instinctively jerk the hand holding the line toward me. I look down and a little water dragon is glaring at me as he is scarfing down the piece of prawn he was able to tear off the hook!

The little feller hung around for awhile giving me the stink-eye as I continued fishing. Eventually, he wandered off (or so I thought).

After a bit, it was time to put a new prawn on the hook, so I pulled one out of the bag and set it on the rock as I put the others away. That was when the clever bugger came out of his ambush! ZOOOM!!! He flew from between the rocks, snagged my prawn, then sat about a meter away from me chewing on it and looking at me with a "Whatcha gonna do about it?" attitude.

After that, I went on to catch 4 catfish before the missus was finished with her meeting. All in all, not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

Mate I am a student from UQ. Lucky u successfully fished at UQ.

During the revision week of last semester, i spent the whole weekend at the library. One night, I cant stop thinking about fishing, then i grabbed my rod and went to the bank of brisbane river just next to the football fields. After 5 mins, from nowhere, the security came and asked me to leave,,,, That was strange, there was no camera there, i didnt light any lights, the car just drive from the distance straight to where i was....

They say, Brisbane river besides to the UQ property and all other properties prohibits fishing...

Damn then....

Good on you catch at least something in the uni :)

Think you will find that the security was full of BS. From memory it was legislated that all the land on UQ was public space.

If you are student there then why not go to the student union and set up a UQ fishing club. Bit hard for security to argue that you are doing an illegal activity and boot you off campus when they turn a blind eye to the pot smokers on the oval.

But the Ultimate Frisbee team has to practice somewhere!
