Tick warning

Ticks are rampant again at the moment in the southeast.

Over the last few weeks our cat has been coming home with about 3 or 4 bush ticks each day on him. I got home Monday after work and my dog's bark had changed and was unstable on his feet. Took him straight to the vets and pulled a paralysis tick off him. An overnight stay with tick antiserum and $700 later he came home. He is still recovering but doing well. We are very lucky we acted asap as they can be lethal.

We are used to the animals getting bush ticks and we are pretty thorough at checking them all over and getting them off but the one that slipped through was a paralysis tick which are very nasty.

That's a good reminder and glad your dogs on the mend Many think that with the cooler weather their pets are safe. I had the same thing happen to my dog several winters ago. Keep up your anti-tick meds and check for them regularly no matter what the season.

Lucky you got it early mate. I cant search for them on husky's as the coat is too thick. I use Preventic collars which cover for paralysis ticks for two months, other ticks three months. Does not do fleas but.

On a brighter note the cost of the serum and vet etc hasn't changed since 1984 when I had to put Hobo in with a paralysis tick. $740 it cost me. Expensive for a dog I found abandoned in the gutter as a pup.
