A report has revealed recreational hunting to be one of the safest pastimes or ‘sports’ in the country, above watersports, motorsports and equestrian activities.

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine examined the National Coroners Information System (*1) database to gain the statistical data for the Australian External Cause Deaths While Engaged In Hunting Activities report, (*2) which was produced for the Game Council NSW.

Hunters in New South Wales will be helping the state government with feral animal control in national parks following the approval of a bill this month. The Daily Telegraph reported that explosions in feral pig, fox, goat and rabbit populations were recognised by the government and that a cost-effective control method was needed.

Governments prepare for firearms law tightening

The Minister for Home Affairs and Justice, the Hon Jason Clare, will soon be meeting with state and territory Police Ministers to discuss loopholes in firearm laws and ownership.

Mr Clare previously said that in light of an apparent surge in criminal gun use, the Federal Government would take steps to address the situation.

SSAA National will be watching this issue closely to ensure that any new laws or regulations do not impinge on the freedoms of law-abiding firearms owners.
