summer or winter whiting?

Hi guys, not a specific identification but i was wondering if someone could explain how i can differentiate summer and winter whiting.

Winter whiting look all blotchy, big, but faint dark patches on them.

you will usually find that winter whiting have spots on their top fin and along the side of their body

i caught 4 little summer whiting on saterday... i was gona keep em as live bait because its winter and i thought they must of been winter whiting but they had no spots.. So i through the tidlers back in search of a bigga creature.

Summer Whiting are very clean to look at and have a size limit of I think 23cm, Whinter whiting look blotchy and I think have no size limit

Yep and generally you will find a summer whiting is caught more in shallower water in creeks and estuaries and Diver (winter) Whiting are generally found in deeper water like Moreton Bay. Their is also no size limit or bag limit for winter whiting and catches of 100+ are not uncommon well now they are not so common. But u will still usually come home with 50+. Winter Whiting have less flesh and generally u will need 6-12 fillets per person depending on size. Maybe more if they like a feed and like the rest winter whiting have dark but faint spots on them. Hope this helps you out.

PS. Winter Whiting have a very succulent and delicious flesh i rate them higher than summer whiting but that is debatable.

both types of whiting taste great

i found best way to catch em running ball sinker with red bead attached short or long shank hook with fresh worm for bait
