150hp V6 Johnson Timing Issue

Took the boat for a run today and noticed the motor idling very high in neutral. Removed the cowling and found the timing advance was not right back in the start position. Moved it back by hand and the motor started to idle normally. Is there meant to be a spring on the lever to bring it back? Couldnt see where it would go or do I have to take the top plastic cover off? Its a 1993 V6 Johnson 150hp. Cheers for any info

Well took the top cover off today and found the broken spring so all good :-)
