Tanzania freshwater and offshore

hi all,

for the last 3 months i have been lucky enough to visit the missus family in tanzania, east africa. also it turned out lucky because her cousins are keen fishos. anyway we started out in southern tanzania fishing some rivers. we hoped to get a tiger fish but i think we were a little early in the season. we had a beautiful spot but got moved along when a herd of elephants decided they wanted to drink there.

the next spot was full of hipppos which was pretty scary but we got some decent catfish. i had never eaten them before but they werent too bad

we also caught a bunch of these small red robbers. cooked them up in a nice curry sauce

after that we went out to pangani beach and headed offshore. first session out we hit the close in reefs and caught a few small trev's on squids. also speared one goatfish.

next day headed out deep and saw a bunch of birds. saw a big kingie jumping and eventually found a bust up of yellow fin. unfortunately we couldnt get close enough to get a good cast in. then found a school of rainbow runners. good good casts into them but couldnt manage a hook up. eventually decided to head back and came across a local net fisherman who had a decent kingie. we bought it for lunch for about $12 and of course as soon as we did a nice trev hit the rapala. at least we didnt go home empty handed.

next arvo hit the reefs again with a few beers and got the best gt of the trip. then pulled in another to finish of a good few days. not a lot of variety but good times and nice fish all in all

also got to see turtles hatching which was nice.

Awesome report, pity youdid not get a tiger, they are my favourite Freshwater fish. What I would do to spend 3 months in Tanzania , it's on the bucket list for sure.

Always fish the hippos, lots of fish hang near them. Just be prepared to run

Definitely cool. Love seeing fishing from somewhere else.

Always fish the hippos ... that's a tactic I would not have considered but makes sense.

And I've always wanted to watch turtles hatch. I think its one of natures coolest events.

hippos crap in the water and fish hang around for that. personally i am pro life and tend to go opposite where hippos are
