Very disappointing news from SEQ waqter.

The following email was received from Seqwater today 07/03/2013 at 5.01pm

Dear Stakeholder,

Water quality test results received by Seqwater this afternoon indicate that the raw water in Lake Samsonvale exceeds the acceptable limits for recreation activities.

Water quality monitoring of lakes used for recreation purposes is undertaken by Seqwater in line with the Guidelines for Managing Risks in Recreational Waters released by the National Health and Medical Research Council in 2008.

Accordingly, Lake Samsonvale will remain CLOSED to all water-based recreation activities, until further notice.

We will continue to monitor the water quality, and will reopen the lake as soon as it is appropriate to do so.

There is no appreciable threat to treated drinking water sourced from Lake Samsonvale from this water quality issue – this closure is related to water-based recreation activities on the lake.

Seqwater understands the frustration of many of our regular recreation users with the lake closure, and we appreciate your assistance in communicating this temporary closure to all interested people.

The seq water website states that the dam is at 90% capacity but when you delve further the status of the dam was changed from a water supply dam to a flood mitigation dam on 25th January and the minister decreed that the temporary FSL was to be set at aprox 80% of the old FSL so the current level is aprox 70% of prev FSL.To my untrained eyes the dam seems to be down at least 2m.

There has been over 20 major releases from the dam since this has been decreed and who knows what effect this has had on the lungfish and other stocked fish populations of the dam.

If the bass survive the the big drop they will have a chance to repopulate other waterways but it is a death sentence for all other species as soon as they hit the salt.

So ray if its a flood dam now? Shouldn't access be open all over the dam?

I've notice myself it has drop heaps with all these realeses too. Wonder if the will fetch the other over wall fish a d put them back like last time?

It has been declared a flood mitigation dam until the end of this month.

The dam is closed to the public due to water quality issues.

There has been some rescues of lung fish which have been relocated to above the dam wall no other species have been touched.

excuse my ignorance Ray but what areas below the dam wall are susceptible to flooding. I can not remember hearing much about areas flooding?

What's causing the water quality problem that is preventing permit holders from boating on the dam? Are the cattle on the adjoining properties breaking bounds and causing p*** and p** pollution or is because the large number of septic tanks in the catchment area have seeped into the dam or is it just an excuse to try and stop people wanting to boat on the dam. Somerset reopened yesterday and they have exactly the same type of inflow as NPD so what's it all about?

Ted to my knowledge there had been only 13 properties affected and water only entered the rumpus room area of one of them the other 12 only had water in their yards. Someone has some political pull.

Ian must be all the ferals upstream doing dangerous do dos.
