Fishing Christmas Island (Kiribati)

Fish Head

Recommended Posts

A group of six of us have just returned from Christmas Island (Kiribati)chasing anything and everything. As usual, bonefish inshore and GTs offshore were the popular targets, but what I really enjoy about fishing there is the diversity of what you can catch. You can be stalking bones in shin deep water on a secluded back country flat when all hell breaks loose as a massive GT crashes into the shallows. Offshore you can have guys casting with light gear into the shallow edges hooking coronation trout, red bass and sweetlips (long nose emperor), while guys are casting poppers out the other side getting monstered by GTs. The toughest decision each morning is which rods to take and which ones to leave behind!

Highlights for me include catching my first milkfish on fly, watching GTs hunt flying fish, seeing guys getting dragged around the deck by GTs and seeing yellowfin getting airborne chasing poppers and stickbaits.

Flats GT for Travis this fish ate at the rod tip and then did a quick 360 dash around him before burrowing back to deeper water
