Bad swells today off Gold coast =\ any reason why?

Launched off at the seaway to head out past the GC bar today at 6:45am. predicted weather was low winds of an average 5knots, easterly swells of 2 meters based off seabreeze.

at the bar i was greeted with hefty big swells and outside conditions were just as bad, i barely made it to 24 fathoms before my little brother went green from being sea sick. had to face facts that there was no fishing to be had, so i turned back in. by the time i came in which was around 10am after checking out mermaid/palm conditions, the swells were that bad that i couldnt spot a single boat that was out (saw 4 on my way out the bar).

my question is, does swell directions play apart of making things lumpy? winds were good, swells were only 2 meters, what other variables play apart in affecting the weather. was quite excited for today :( damn you weather man.

i camped in the seaway with about 15-20 other boats out, so much traffic and the water was extremely dirty.

cheers

Tim
