Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

The Honourable John McVeigh

More fingerlings for State dams

Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister John McVeigh today announced $690,000 to re-stock Queensland dams with fingerlings.

Minister McVeigh said the funding would be distributed through grants as part of the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS).

“The SIPS provides a sustainable, world-class freshwater fishing option for recreational fishers,†Mr McVeigh said.

“Stocked Impounded waters such as dams need to be continually replenished as most stocked species will not reproduce.

“Most of the popular dams in Queensland are stocked each year with fingerlings and under the scheme, fishers pay a fee to fish at any of the 32 registered dams across Queensland.

“Three-quarters of funds from the sale of permits go to community stocking groups throughout Queensland to buy native fish fingerlings and for other activities aimed at enhancing the fishery.

“Species stocked include barramundi, golden perch, silver perch, Australian bass, Mary River cod, Murray River cod and saratoga.â€

Each year, the sale of permits from the financial year is divided between all 32 dams on the scheme, based on angler’ preference and surface area.

The problem with Mondy is the stocking group is a bunch of old farmers who hate Barra.

They pour the money into Bass fingerlings to the detriment of a massive tourism industry that have spawned there with the huge barra fishery.

That is why local businesses up there have been asking for donations for the past 5 or so years so they can get more barra into the lake.

I did ask Rob Howell about his request for donations a few years back as I had allocated my SIPS to go to Mondy, he was a little vague about details. That explains a bit thanks.

Beau you read the wrong figure.

Very nice of him to allocated 690k of funding to go along with the SIP money.

Where is it? That money mentioned gone to each dam is only the SIP money, I dont see any extra funding? Perhaps it coming later?

Or perhaps he is claiming our own money as "funding" he can announce?

If they spent all the money on quality Barra from the start that would have been something to see. Why stock Bass in the Kolan at all?

My memory tells me that only a very small percentage of SIP funds was to be used for admin purposes and the balance , about 95%,was to be distributed to stockers. This press release is implying that the Qld. govt is doing a great job and yet they have scrubbed the Fisheries release funds which were grants from cons. revenue. They appear to be claiming the kudos for something they are no longer doing. Same thing with the funds from boat rego., service funds all go into cons. rev. I doubt if we have any thinking pollie in the govt. who is a fisho. When we have clowns like Driscoll who calls us all a pack of dole bludgers, what else can we expect.
