Fancy giving plastic another try

Hi all,

As the subject line says, i'm thinking of giving the plastics and even small hard bodies a go. After a few failed attempts with plastics I gave up but it seems ideal for the summer evenings that are on their way to give it another go (clean and no smelly bait :cheer: ).

I was using a cheap Big W combo before which undoubtedly didn't help. Just wondered if there were any suggestions for a suitable good value combo out there for less than $200. I've got some 4lb and 8lb line and a few jig heads and plastics to get me started just need the rod and reel thats suited to it.

Cheers

Chris

Cheers guys, I know i'm asking to be spoon fed here but what rod length and weight would you recommend? I am totally new to this kind of fishing (apart from my earlier failed attempt). I plan to use it in estuary's and river mouths like Hornibrook bridge/ Baxters jetty. I've got a couple of other cheap rods for bait fishing so this will be exclusively for lures.

Thanks for the tips!

Depends how good your knots are for line choice. I prefer to use a slightly higher lb braid to the leader choice so if i snag it hopefully snaps at the hook knot not the braid eg i use 6lb leader mostly with light plastics so i have 8lb or 10lb spooled up.

Yeah Sehrguht - I apply the same method as you, when I am snagged, I lose the jighead but my braid and leader is intact. Plus its a challenge with using 4 to 6 lb leader and less likely to spook the fish as well (leader is nearly 'invisible' in the water).

  • 2 weeks later...

Made contact with dinodadog who set me up with a nice light 1-3kg combo and some little plastics to help get me going. Had a try the other day with no success but yesterday down at shornecliffe at low tide I managed to land a small flat head that went back and a couple of gar that went in the bait stock in the freezer. It will probably sound pathetic but I am delighted :cheer: it makes such a difference knowing you are using a valid action that works. And a big thanks to Dino for setting me on my way! I'm thinking of getting one of the pflueger set up recommended about for flathead at a later date.

Thanks for all the help and encouragement :)
