Fishing the 35's

A couple of mates and myself had a pretty good day offshore yesterday. We started off popping some of the reefs off north Staddie, this was very slow with only one hit from a Yellow Fin Tuna that missed the hooks. We where marking some pretty good bait with a scattering of decent fish but getting them to hit out surface lures wasn't working so after spending a bit more time we decided to give some of the wider grounds a crack to see what we could find.

After doing a bit of a sound around we marked up some good bait and decided to have a drop with a combo of jigs and plastics. We were fishing quite deep so an ounce jig weight was necessary to get to the bottom, but a long wait was required. After I gave the jig a crack and noticed the other boys getting a few hits on plastics I decided to tie on a plastic to and join them. It was while I was re-rigging that Brett hooked up to something decent. The fish was more of a weight with large thumps being felt through the rod. Once the fish surfaced it was called to be a Cobia and a decent one at that.

My other mate Jack also got a nice Tusk fish, this fish was really cool to look at with some really nice colours and some pretty mean looking teeth on it too. I also dropped a decent fish halfway to the surface of the boat, I was pretty gutted cause this felt like a nice fish.

We decided to try make a move and see if we could find some other good ground that was holding bait and good fish. It didn't take to long till we came across one spot that was holding some really good bait and good fish stacking up o the sounder. This spot produced three good hook ups, two for Jack and one for myself. Jacks first good hit decided to let the lure go while being brought to the surface, his second one was also a good fish that decided it didn't want to be seen either. My good hit was similar to Jacks, the fish just seemed to drop off halfway to the surface and I kept the lure moving to entice another bite and then whack, after a very spirited fight a very nice Green Jobfish was boated and a first for myself.

We didn't spend too much longer on this spot and decided to move to another, this resulted in a decent Dart that went home for the table. We then moved to another spot and Brett was tossing a small ish stick bait, this had chased through the wash by what looked like a good Mackerel but shied off the lure once it got closer to the boat.

One thing that was really surprising was the amount of whale action that we saw, we had whales surfacing easily within 10 meters of the boat, as well as some breaching and lifting their tails out of the water, it was awesome to see and made the day that much better.

Thanks for looking,

Tom

Quality not quantity mate.

Nice fish in that lot, good feed to boot as well.

Those green jobfish are sensational on the chew too, bled and thrown in a slurry, then crumbed and deep fried... :woohoo:

Agreed, i highly rate the green Jobbies for the table.
